PRELIM EXAMINATION
MATH 221- Linear Algebra

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

 This test questionnaire contains 10 ITEMS. Examinees shall manage to use the 1 HOUR.
 Read the instructions carefully.
 ONLY CALCULATOR is allowed during the entire examination. (No cell phones)
 If there are questions regarding the test, immediately ask the instructor/examiner and not your seatmate.

Instruction: Read the questions/word problems carefully. Use the separate sheet of paper given to you to write all the possible
solutions from numbers 1-10 (Solutions are part of your score) and encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1) The sum of two numbers is −17 and the difference is −69 . Create equations from the word problem and find the solution
by solving the system using elimination method.
a) −43 ,26
b) 43 ,−26
c) −53 , 36
d) 53 ,−16
2) Use substitution method to find the solution of the system of equations.

{2 x−7 y =17
y =x−6

a) x=5 ,= y=1
b) x=−5 , y=1
c) x=−5 , y=−1
d) x=5 ,= y=−1
3) Costumes are needed for the school play. Boy’s costumes require 6 meters of fabric, 7 meters of ribbon and 3 packets of
sequins. Girl costumes require 7 meters of fabric, 10 meters of ribbon and 4 packets of sequins. Fabric costs ₱25.00, ribbon
costs ₱ 11.00 , and a pack of sequins cost ₱21.00. Find the cost of each costume. (Write down two matrices of P and Q
such that Matrix P contains elements of the no. of meters/ pack for each needed materials (Fabric, Ribbon, and Sequins) for
the costumes of boys and girls respectively and Matrix Q contains elements of the cost of each needed materials (Fabric,
Ribbon, and Sequins) for the costumes. Multiply the matrices to find the cost of each costume.)
(Note: We can only multiple matrices if the no. of columns in the first matrix is equal to the number of rows in the second
matrix)

a) Boy’s costume- ₱369.00

Girl’s costume- ₱ 290.00
b) Boy’s costume- ₱209.00
Girl’s costume- ₱ 396.00
c) Boy’s costume- ₱290.00
Girl’s costume- ₱ 369.00
d) Boy’s costume- ₱396.00
Girl’s costume- ₱ 209.00
