What’s In

Hello learners! Previously you studied about materials, tools and equipment
used in poultry production. Talking about installation of chick guard and portable
heaters, some of those items were also being used. By this time let us proceed to
the new lesson which is installing and adjusting chick guard, curtains and portable
heater.

What’s New

Starting a business project such like this poultry production you

should have enough knowledge and skills in order to succeed. You should be aware
and observant. Now, on the space provided I want you to write your idea about the
following questions:

Write your answer in a separate sheet.

1. Why do newly hatched chicks need heat?
________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________
2. Do you think newly hatched chicks will survive in the absence of a hen? Why?
______________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________

What Is It

Let us assume you have written and answered the given questions above.
What was your idea? Before anything may I ask you, whohas raised a chicken at
home? I know most of you have a chicken at home, am I right?

Now let us all start from an egg, Why do egg hatched? It is because of heat
supplied by hen at brooding stage. Brooding is the process of supplying heat. In the
case of a poultry houses, a brooder is also used.Brooder is defined as heated house
for chicks in the absence of hen.

12
Newly hatched chicks should stay inside a brooder to keep them warm and
dry. During this first week of life chicks could not withstand the cold temperature
outside considering that the chicks feathers this time are not fully developed.
Brooder is also the same as heater. Poultry houses used a portable heater.
Why it is called portable?
Portable means it can be easily carried or moved especially because it is a
smaller version than usual.
This time let us proceed to chick guard and curtains inside a brooder. Why
you should install chick guard and curtains? It is being installed or fixed to prevent
chicks from straying too far from the heat source. A curtain is a device to prevent air
from moving from one space to another. Chick guard will then be removed when
chicks learn the source of heat at the age one week. If you will ask what materials
can be used as a chick guard, you can use a card board, wire mesh or galvanized
iron with a diameter of five feet.
Brooding areas could be throughout the whole house but with rings of card
board often this is referred to as CHICK GUARD.
Now, in order to maintain or control the temperature the curtains must be
sealed, eliminate holes and cracks because it is where the air will enter and interfere
the desired temperature which is 29.4 to 32.2 degree centigrade.
As I have said as the chick becomes older, temperature must be controlled
and adjusted. How to do this? Just simply raise the height of bulb. Use 60 watt bulb
12-18 inches above the floor in a brooder. Infrared bulb is recommended. Four to six
weeks chicks should stay under a heat lamp.

What’s More!

Directions: Answer the following questions. Write your answers in the answer sheet.

1-5 What is the purpose of installing a chick guard?

___________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________

6-10 Why should newly hatched chick stay inside a brooder?

___________________________________________________________________

11-15 What will you do in order to maintain/ control temperature?

What’s In

How are you learners? You learned from the previous lesson the importance
of installing portable heaters including the chick guard and air curtains.

So, this time, we will discuss cleaning and lay outing of litter materials.

What’s New

How are you this time? Cleaning poultry and litter management are some of
the basic management practices in poultry raising.

This time, I want you to list down the procedure in dry cleaning poultry house.
Write your answer in the answer sheet.
1.

4.
5.

19
What Is It

Litter –refers to trash, such as cans

and bottles that are left lying on an open public place. Why do you use litter material
in poultry house? What are litter materials?

Litter materials used in poultry house:

1.rice straws
2.rice hulls
3.sawdust
4. wood shavings
5. peanut hulls and
6. other dry absorbent organic material.

On the other hand, bedding material helps absorb moisture, limiting the
production of ammonia and harmful pathogen.

Factors to Consider in Successful Management:

1. depth of the litter
2. floor space per bird
3. feeding practices
4. The kind of floor
5. ventilation

Now how are you going to apply litter material? Simply spread on the floor
with 5 centimeter deep depth. The most important thing to remember is to keep litter
dry. When litter begins to retain.Moisture it will clump together. This will be prevented
through proper ventilation.

In cleaning poultry house there are two methods:

1. dry cleaning
2. wet cleaning

The following are procedures in dry cleaning:

1. Start by removing all bird from the building to be cleaned
2. Sweep or blow dust
3. Removed all feed from feeders
4. Scrape manure and accumulated dust from perches
5. Removed all litter from the floor

Procedures in Wet Cleaning:

1. Soaking-soak the heavily soiled areas( use slow pressured sprayer)
2. Washing-wash every surface in the building (use detergent)
3. Rinsing-rinse after 1 and 2 steps.

20
What’s More
How did you find out the activity? The next task is to follow up further what
have you learned.
Directions: Arrange the correct sequence in dry cleaning method by writing a
number on space provided. Write 1 for the First step, 2 for the second
and so on.Write your answer in the answer sheet.
_________ a. sweep or blow dust

What’s In

Welcome back learners, this module comprises three lessons finally, you are
now on the last lesson which is all about Perform Waste Disposal following DENR
regulations.

What’s New

To proceed, let me know how you did dispose your waste at home. Do you
have consideration in disposing your waste material?
Are you segregating your waste at home? These are some of the question when we
discuss about proper waste disposal.

Below is an activity that will test your knowledge about proper waste disposal.
Directions: Give an example each type of waste. Write your answer on your answer
sheet.

26
A. Liquid waste B. Recyclable Waste
1. 1.
2. 2.

C. Solid waste D. Hazardous Waste

1. 1.
2. 2.

E. Organic waste

2.

What Is It

Waste management plays an important role in maintaining clean and healthy

environment. Exposure to hazardous waste can affect human health, direct dumping
of untreated waste from factories, industries
In land, rivers, seas and lakes result in the accumulation of toxic which is harmful to
man and animal.
The following are tips to reduce waste
1. Take reusable bags to the store when shopping.
2. Reduce the use of disposable plates and cups.
3. Store leftover food in reusable containers instead of single use plastic
bags.
4. Reduce the use of plastic bags and polystyrene foam.

The government is trying to minimize the effect of irresponsible waste

disposal in the community. The DENR promulgates a law Republic Act Number
9003 which is known as Philippine Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000
which was created to ensure the public health and environment.
To understand further let us know the following:

Waste – Any substance which is discarded after primary use

Organic waste –any material that is biodegradable and comes from either plant or
an animal
Recycling – Method to convert the waste material into product which can be use
Liquid waste- any form of liquid residue that is hazardous to people and
environment
Hazardous waste – ways that has substantial or potential threats to public health or
the environment
Waste are classified into five Types
1. Liquid waste
2. Solid waste
3. Organic waste
4. Recyclable waste
5. Hazardous waste
