SHORT NOTES ON SECL
SECL's history can be traced back to the formation of Coal India Limited (CIL)
in 1975, which was a landmark event in India's coal industry. CIL was created
as a state-owned company, consolidating various coal-producing companies
under a single umbrella. The objective was to enhance efficiency, increase
production, and address the growing energy needs of the nation.
Following the formation of CIL, SECL emerged as one of its subsidiaries. The
company primarily operates in the state of Chhattisgarh, which is abundant in
coal reserves. Chhattisgarh, located in central India, has a rich coal-bearing
belt that stretches across several districts, including Korba, Bilaspur, Raigarh,
and Surguja. SECL's presence in this region has been instrumental in
harnessing the coal potential and contributing to the energy security of the
country.
The growth and success of SECL can be attributed to several factors. The
company adopted advanced mining technologies and practices to improve
productivity and safety standards. It invested in state-of-the-art machinery
and equipment, including large-scale excavators, draglines, and high-capacity
dump trucks, to ensure efficient extraction and transportation of coal.
SECL has also made significant contributions to the local communities and the
environment. The company has undertaken various corporate social
responsibility (CSR) initiatives, focusing on education, healthcare,
infrastructure development, and sustainable livelihoods. It has implemented
several welfare programs for the welfare of its employees, including housing
schemes, healthcare facilities, and educational support for their children.
Gevra, the largest open-pit coal mine in India, is a flagship project of SECL. It
covers an extensive area and contributes significantly to the company's overall
coal production. Gevra mine has been a showcase of SECL's capabilities and
technological advancements, enabling the extraction of millions of tonnes of
coal efficiently and sustainably.
SECL (South Eastern Coalfields Limited) is one of the major subsidiaries of Coal
India Limited (CIL), the largest coal-producing company in the world. SECL is
headquartered in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, and operates primarily in the coal-
rich region of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh in India. Here is a brief
overview of the present company profile of SECL:
➢ Coal Fields:
SECL follows the coal distribution policy set by Coal India Limited (CIL). As a
subsidiary of CIL, SECL plays a crucial role in meeting the coal demand of
various sectors, including thermal power plants, steel industries, cement
plants, and other industrial consumers. The coal distribution policy of SECL
ensures equitable distribution of coal among the consumers based on their
requirements, contractual agreements, and priority sectors.
As a subsidiary of CIL, SECL adheres to the coal pricing policies and guidelines
set by the Government of India. The coal prices are determined based on
various factors, including quality parameters, market conditions, and
government regulations.
SECL's contribution to the coal industry and its adherence to the coal
distribution policy have positioned it as a reliable supplier of coal in India. The
company's robust operational infrastructure, advanced mining technologies,
and commitment to social and environmental responsibilities make it a
significant player in the Indian coal sector.
SECL maintains the fleet of 1,225 nos. HEMM (Heavy Earth Moving Machines)
comprising of 568 Dumpers, 160 Dozers, 76 Shovels, 4 Draglines, 10 Surface
Miners, 104 Drills, 104 Loaders, 51 Motor Graders and other Machines. This

It's important to note that the specific production figures achieved by SECL
mines may vary over time due to various factors such as market demand,
geological considerations, and government policies. To obtain the most
accurate and up-to-date information on SECL's current production
achievements, it is recommended to refer to official sources such as SECL's

South Eastern Coalfields (SECL) has become the second state-run Coal India
(CIL) company to reach the milestone of producing more than 150 million
tonnes (mt) of coal in the current financial year (FY).
Sambalpur-based Mahanadi Coalfields (MCL) was the first CIL entity to join
the club this FY.
