If you're playing one of the many bx derivitives, then treasure and xp are split evenly between all
adventurers and hired hands.

Hirelings and henchman may only get a half share depending on what the PC offers if you're
playing morale rules etc for BX

You're of course free to decide either way, but the regular way is that everyone receives the share
of XP according to the share of the treasure they get. Typically it's equally shared, but not
assuming it opens possibilities. For example my players regularly give more treasure to someone
lower-level in order to help them level up faster. That's a choice that I find interesting to keep in
the game.

If the players find 4,000 gold, does that mean each character gets 4,000 gold?

Division of Experience
The XP awards for treasures recovered and monsters defeated are totalled and divided evenly
between all characters who survived the adventure -- this includes retainers (see p56).
Awarded XP is always divided evenly, irrespective of how the players decide to divide treasure.
The referee may optionally grant XP bonuses to players who did particularly well. Likewise,
players who did not do their share of the work may be penalized.

That's interesting! I played quite a lot of B/X a while back and we tallied XP == GP, which meant
that retainers got screwed with a half share.
We also played that if a retainer earned even 1 xp, they became a level 1 NPC, class rolled at
random. Lots of /me removes headband, "I was an elf this whole time!" and "turns out that
chubby kid we hired to hold torches is a halfling!"
