Encouraging Hireling Use

discussion

I’m about to run Barrowmaze for a group of players/characters who I ran through Silveraxe, and
want to encourage the use of hirelings/retainers. These players come from a 5e tradition and
many of them don’t think to recruit companions when delving into dungeons.

I’ve told them once or twice directly about hiring help, but the message didn’t seem to stick. What
are some in game ways that I might be able to encourage this?

They get slaughtered?

Or, if you're nicer, have a hireling come up to them and ask for a job.

Did you tell them why people usually hire retainers or just that people generally hire them?

If you told them that people usually hire retainers so that they are less likely to die and they still
choose not to get them then there is nothing to worry about.

I’ve only really mentioned that it is something people do, so explaining the reason for it probably
is an excellent next step. Combined with an expedition to the dungeon being somewhat
dangerous, perhaps they’ll internalize what I’m suggesting
