honganh4790 Hi everyone,

im building a system using sinamics S120 to control speed for tension motor . can
i use power cables without shield?
And one more thing, i read in sinamic s120 module datasheet they wrote :
Max. motor cable lenght:

Shielded100 m (328 ft)

Advanced Member
Unshielded 150 m (492 ft)
can someone explain to me why maximum length of cable with shield is shorter
then unshield? i think cable with shield is better than without shield.

Technology Team Hello,

the inverter is using fast switching power semiconductors, providing a PWM

voltage output to the drive. The capacity of the motor cable is higher for shielded
cables and as this capacity is charged / discharged with the puls frequency of the
drive, it causes additional leakage currents, the inverter must provide.

As the inverter has some limits for the current it can provide, the possible capacity
of the cable is limited and so the length is shorter with shielded cables.

honganh4790 Thank so much for your answer.

So can i use cable without shielded for s120 ? maximum length is about 120m.
Because of we are have spare cable without shield,so we are considerring to use
it for saving the cost . but i really worrry about the inverter will be damage if we
using it

Technology Team Hello,

unshielded cables will not damage the inverter, but please take into account, that
the EMC category may not be fulfilled with unshielded cables.

Depending on the size of your Motor Module, oversizing would also allow 120 m
shielded cable. See extract from the catalogue.
