a.Differnces bet.functional literacy from functional illiterate

“A person is literate who can with understanding both read and write a short
simple statement on his everyday life. A person is illiterate who cannot with
understanding both read and write a short simple statement on his everyday life. A
person is functionally literate who can engage in all those activities in which
literacy is required for effective functioning of his group and community and also
for enabling him to continue to use reading, writing, and calculation for his own and
the community’s development.A person is functionally illiterate who cannot engage
in all those activities in which literacy is required for effective functioning of
hisgroup and community and also for enabling him to continue to usereading,
writing, and calculation for his own and the community’sdevelopment (UNESCO,
1978, p.183).

b.How is functional literacy differs from literacy?

Literacy”, the ability to read and write, is often equated with “education”,
but is not the same. Literacy is a step to education. For me, education is the
complete development of a person in terms of knowledge, sensibility and most
important, behaviour in different situations. Thus, we can say that he is literate.

Functional literacy is about developing and enhancing the skills our whole society
needs to function. If we don’t have individuals with mathematical knowledge,
reading and writing skills, or analytical abilities, we cannot have functioning
communities, businesses, or governments.

c.How can we improve functional literacy?

To improve functional skills in literacy, you can:

 Use real-life practice at every opportunity.
 Study intently to pass the exams and internalize the knowledge you've gained.
 Use a supportive trainer.
 Annotate the text by highlighting key sections, writing notes or circling words
to research.
 Work in teams.
 Read aloud.
 Host a book recommendation event.
 Encourage students to choose their own books.
 Make a geographical map.
 Conduct individual meetings with students.
 Offer reading rewards.

d.Why How does socio economic status affect education?

 Low SES and exposure to adversity are linked to decreased educational success . 2

 Early experiences and environmental influences can have a lasting impact on

learning, behavior and health.
 Lower levels of physical and educational resourcing, lower expectations of
teachers and parents, and lower levels of student self-efficacy, enjoyment and
other non-cognitive outcomes.
 Opportunity to learn (particularly in mathematics) is more restricted for lower
socioeconomic students.
 Social and economic inequalities have important and long-lasting effects on
children’s cognitive and socio-emotional development as well as on educational
outcomes.
