3.0 INTRODUCATION

The management of waste has been a difficult and challenging issue faced in Zambia over the years due to lack of
knowledge on waste management by the people in Zambia. Poor waste management has caused a number of issues
such as the spread of diseases like cholera and dysentery, it has also caused pollution in the sense that people throw
their trash in public places and burn them in streets which causes air pollution and may have negative effects on
people must likely people with breathing problems.

So this field project was conducted to find out the types of waste found in Luanshya, the dangers of waste
mismanagement and the methods used in displacing waste.

3.1 Background

Luanshyu is known to be a small district with a lot of challenges pertaining to waste management. The area is faced
with a number of challenges related to sanitation due to lack of knowledge of waste management. Due to lack of
knowledge of waste management people do not know where to throw their waste, where to dump their waste and how
to manage their waste in the areas in Luanshya. But you can find some development in the urban areas Kamireda
where you find people who are paid to collect trash by the homes where the collect the trash from which helps
minimise the waste in Luanshya but not everyone can afford this service so the end using different methods of waste
management such as creating a dump pit at their homes, so this service as only improved the urban areas in Luanshya
but not such much because only a select few can afford them or will see this a waste of money and end using some
other method instead.

III. And if they know about the dangers of waste mismanagement?
