A STUDY ON HOUSEHOLD WASTE MANAGEMENT IN

WARD XIII OF KURICHY GRAM PANCHAYAT
The government of India as well as many state governments is looking up to gram panchayats to come
up with a working system to manage household waste in rural areas. We must admit the fact that some
gram panchayats have been successful in managing solid waste, while many others are in turbulence.
Hence, a study is very essential in a local area to understand the household waste management
practices. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the waste management practices of
Kurichy gram panchayat especially concentrating on ward XIII of the Malakunnam locality. For the
study systematic random sampling techniques were adopted. The analysis is done from the question
being distributed among the community. The finding revealed that about 90% of the people residing
on gram panchayat make their opinions in a positive way. Many of the people are involved in the
proper management of waste, they receives a better support from the part of local authorities.

I. INTRODUCTION There are many ways in which household

Household Waste, known as
domestic waste or residential waste, are
disposable materials generated by
households. This waste can be comprised of
non-hazardous waste and hazardous waste.
Non-hazardous waste can include food
scraps, paper, bottles, etc. which can be
recycled or composted. Examples of
hazardous waste include batteries and
household cleaners. It is important that
hazardous waste is handled in a safe manner
to ensure that they are disposed properly so
that they do not cause harm.
The amount of household waste
produced by houses can vary depending on
the factors like revenue and lifestyle.
waste can be reduced. It includes donating
clothes, eliminating single use plastics and
buying sustainable options (bamboo
toothbrush over plastic toothbrush).
Waste can be classified into five types
of waste, which is all commonly found
around the house. These include liquid waste,
solid rubbish, organic waste, recyclable
rubbish and hazardous waste.
Waste management refers to the
practice of collecting, transporting,
processing or disposing of, managing and
monitoring various waste materials. It is
important to observe sustainability in this
aspect so that every bit of waste can be
managed in an efficient manner rather than
just dumping it all in landfills.

 II. METHODOLOGY
A study on present topic make use of
the survey method. The data were collected
from the localities of Malakunnam,
especially from ward XIII of Kurichy gram
panchayat. The proposed study make use of
collecting data from around 20 households
randomly. Varied responses of the members
where noted. For this, questionnaire
containing of 25 questions were prepared for
the evaluation of study and, details regarding
the various aspects of waste management is
noted for the collection of data. The
questionnaire mainly focuses on three
components; such as Household Waste
Disposal, Garbage Collection Service, and
Environmental Awareness of People.
Majority of questions are there in the yes or
no format so that the spontaneous responses
from the respective area is been highlighted
in the study.

The analysis is done from the
question being distributed among the
community. From the above study it is clear
that, about 90% of the people residing on
ward XIII of the Kurichy gram panchayat
make their opinions in a positive way. Their
comments made it clear that household
management of waste is being managed
properly. Only 75% of the people make use
of garbage collection service from the part of
local government. Ohers doesn’t use local
government body service. Only 80% of the
people having environmental awareness on
waste management. The people who stood
against the idea of proper management of
waste is only 20%.

IV. FINDING AND CONCLUSION no format so that the spontaneous responses

regarding the coping strategies associated
with the problems.
The major findings are following:-
1. The waste management in the households
involves sorting of waste. They separate
degradable and non-degradable materials.
2. Well organization of the available space
possessed by each household.
3. Initiative by the Kerala government
scheme named 'Haritha Karma Sena service'
to collect plastic materials from households
are practiced. Only 75% of the people make
use of garbage collection service from the
part of local government. Ohers doesn’t use
local government body service.

4. Many of the people are involved in the
proper management of waste, they receives a
better support from the part of local
authorities.
5. The data analyses that 90 % of household
are managing properly, comparatively a
small portion are being deprived of the
condition.
6. Awareness classes are given among the
public. Even though only 80% of the people
having environmental awareness on waste
management. Others doesn’t aware about the
environmental impact of improper waste
disposal
