DAILY VARIATION OF SOLID WASTE GENERATION IN THE

HOUSEHOLDS OF RESIDENTIAL CUM COMMERCIAL AREA

(KHEORA) OF RAJOURI (J&K)

HUMAIRA HAMID
06-EVS-2021
STUDY AREA

Kheora, Rajouri

This area is located close to the Government Medical

College and Associated Hospital Rajouri.
METHODOLOGY
Minimum of 30 houses were selected for the study consisting of
10 houses of High income (Annual earning above Rs.50,000)
10 houses of Middle income (Annual earning over Rs.30,000)
10 houses of Low-income (Annual earning below Rs.10,000)
Solid waste sampling was conducted over a three-week study period and solid waste generated
in 24-hours was sorted into biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste
Total weight of solid waste was measured using a digital balance.
Number of family members in each household was also recorded during the sampling period.
The amount of biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and total solid waste generated per capita
per day was calculated.
Statistical tools such as averages and standard deviations were used to compare the data to
draw meaningful inferences

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN STUDY AREA (KHEORA, RAJOURI)

 STORAGE: There are no community bins in the study area. Residents either leave their solid waste in front of their homes
or discard it in an open area, storing it in polythene bags, domestic dust bins, or plastic buckets.
 COLLECTION: Collection is done in polythene bags or small dust bins and then thrown in open plots, drains or on the
road sides.
 TRANSPORTATION: There are no transportation facilities available in the study area except bicycle and trolleys. Solid
waste dumped along the road sides is collected and transported by the trucks of Rajouri Municipal Council.
 DISPOSAL: Most of solid waste is disposed off by burning by the waste generators or its employee in the nearby open
space or left unburned in the nearby open plots.
• RECOMMENDATIONS AT AUTHORITY LEVEL
 Study area should be provided with community bins to ensure proper collection and storage of solid waste.
 Proper transportation facilities for moving waste to a suitable disposal location must be provided
 Area should be provided with sweepers for door to door collection of waste.
 Rajouri Municipal Council (RMC) should offer enough personnel, resources, and funding.
 NGOs should be encouraged to collect recyclable waste such as polythene, plastic, glass, and metals so that
these can be recycled and waste can be reduced.

• RECOMMENDATIONS AT PUBLIC LEVEL

 Encouragement of individual-level actions towards waste disposal and management should be emphasized.
 Residents should be educated on how to separate solid waste at its source of origin.
 The public should also be educated on the reuse and recycling of waste materials.
 Awareness camps should be organized to educate people about the harmful consequences of open dumping
of solid waste.
 Additionally, people should be made aware of the harmful impacts of polythene bags.
