1. What is CEED? CEED is the Common Entrance Exam for Design conducted by IIT Bombay. CEED is the entrance exam for admission
to Master of Design (MDes) programs at IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT
Kanpur, IIT Roorkee and IIITDM Jabalpur.

- For women of any category = Rs 1,800
- For SC / ST / PwD category = Rs 1,800
- For Open / OBC-NCL / EWS category = Rs 3600
4. What is the eligibility The eligibility criteria to appear for CEED exam is as follows:

- a degree / diploma / post graduate degree programme of minimum 3 years (after 10+2 level), or
- must have passed the GD Arts diploma programme (10+5 level)

2. Age Limit: There is no age limit to appear for CEED.

3. No of Attempts: Candidates can apply for CEED any number of times.

Note: Eligibility criteria for MDes admission to various institutes may differ from the eligibility criteria for
appearing for CEED. The criteria for each IIT institute is given in the table below.

6. What is the pattern The objective of the Common Entrance Exam for Design (CEED) is to assess the candidate’s aptitude for design
of the CEED entrance covering visual perception ability, drawing skills, logical reasoning, creativity, communication, and problem solving
exam? skills. Here are all the details about the CEED exam:

1. The question paper will consist of two parts: Part A (Objective Section) and Part B (Subjective Section)
2. The question paper will be for 200 marks. Part A = 100 marks. Part B = 100 marks.
3. The exam will be for 3 hours. Part A = 1 hour. Part B = 2.0 hour.
4. The question paper will be in English.
5. Questions from both parts are compulsory.

PART-B - 100 marks | 2.0 hours

1. Part-B of CEED paper consists of five questions which will evaluate drawing, creativity, communication
skills, and problem identification skills.
2. It will require subjective evaluation.
3. The question in Part-B will be displayed on the computer screen and the answer has to be written/drawn
in Part-B answer booklets, which will be collected at the end of the examination.
4. Part-B questions are mandatory for evaluation of CEED paper.

7. What is the syllabus The syllabus in each part of CEED exam is as follows:

I. Part A (Objective Section): Part A of the CEED exam will have questions from the following topics-

1. Visualization and spatial ability: Pictorial and diagrammatic questions to test understanding of
transformation and/or manipulation of 2D shapes and 3D objects and their spatial relationships.
2. Observation and design sensitivity: Ability to detect concealed properties in ordinary things, people,
situations, and events, and thinking critically about them. Ability to discern subtle differences in visual
properties and aesthetic outcomes.
3. Environmental and social awareness: General awareness of environmental factors such as climate,
population, water, vegetation, pollution, weather, natural resources etc., and their implications on the
design of products, images, infrastructure and environment. Awareness of social and cultural connection
with design, history of the designed artefact, and socially responsible and environmentally sustainable
design responses. History of art, sculpture and literature.
4. Analytical and logical reasoning: Ability to look at information, be it qualitative or quantitative in nature,
and discern patterns within the information. Ability to weigh opinions, arguments or solutions against
appropriate criteria. Ability to check for hidden bias or hidden assumptions and whether evidence and
argument support conclusions. Ability to use logic and structured thinking to deduce from a short passage,
which of a number of statements is the most accurate response to a posed question.
5. Language and creativity: Ability to understand and use Standard English. Reading comprehension,
knowledge of English grammar. Ability to think creatively in terms of alternatives, ability to distinguish
innovative options and think out of the box.
6. Design thinking and problem solving: Ability to understand the context, the users and the constraints and
select the most appropriate solution for a given design problem.

II. Part B (Subjective Section): Part-B of CEED paper consists of five questions which will be related following
topics:
● Drawing: Ability to draw products, people or scenes in proportion with good line quality, composition,
proportion, perspective, and shading.
● Creativity: Ability to think out-of-the-box and come-up with unique as well as diverse solutions.
● Communication skills: Ability to communicate concepts and ideas clearly with the help of text and visuals.
● Problem identification skills: Ability to understand the user and the context, knowledge of properties of
materials and their appropriate use in design.

1. Candidates equal to about 10 times the number of seats available obtain ranks in the CEED exam.
2. Obtaining a rank in CEED 2023 does not guarantee admission to the M.Des program. Only top 100 ranks or
so obtain admission in IITs.
3. However, CEED score is considered for admission by several other Design Institutes for admission.

evaluated holistically on set of criteria. There is no scope for re-evaluation of the Part B of CEED exam.

13. What is the process Admission to MDes program at IITs is on the basis of the candidate’s CEED score. Only CEED 2023 qualified
for admission to MDes students can apply for admission to the MDes program. CEED score will be the only selection criteria for MDes
program at IITs? admissions at IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIITDM Jabalpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee & IISc
Bangalore.

After qualifying, candidates must apply to the respective institutes for admission and fulfill other requirements
such as tests and / or interviews of the respective institutes to become eligible for admission. The announcement
for admission to the postgraduate programmes in design CEED 2022 will be notified separately by these institutes.
Candidates are advised to visit the websites of respective institutes for information and application procedure for
the programmes.

Each IIT will have their own M.Des entrance exam. Candidates will have to clear the M.Des entrance exam to get
admission into the IIT of their choice.

14. What is the pattern The M.Des entrance exam is conducted by IITs for offering admission to candidates for the Masters of Design
for M.Des entrance program. Candidates who clear the CEED exam are eligible to apply for the M.Des program at IIT. Here is the
exam conducted by IITs? general pattern followed by all IITs for admission to M.Des programs:

1. Application: The application form has certain SOP questions and design assignments related to your discipline.
Candidates have to complete this application. Only candidates shortlisted based on application will be called for
the next stage.

2. Studio Test: The studio test will have practical / hands-on tests related to your discipline. For example, for
Industrial Design, there could be a model making / product building test. The test may include activities such as
material handling, model making, sketching, writing, problem solving etc.

3. Interview: The personal interview is to understand the candidate and see if they are a right fit for the program.
Here candidates have an opportunity to present their design portfolio.

15. What is the The eligibility criteria is different for different M.Des programs. Candidates have to score a minimum 55% (relaxed
eligibility for application to 50% for reserved category) in their graduation / diploma. Here are further criteria for eligibility:
