TDC – CHC42015 Certificate IV in Community Services

Skills Assessment / Role-play Overview

Throughout this course, students will need to complete some assessments in a simulated work environment, either online with a TAFE Digital
assessor, or as a recording that students will upload to the TDC for marking. The information provided below will assist students with this process.
TAFE Digital recommends that students complete all required knowledge assessments and online quizzes before moving onto these skills-based
assessments.

For role-plays that are being COMPLETED ONLINE WITH A TAFE DIGITAL TEACHER ASSESSING

How to book an online role-play with a Community Services teacher:

• Contact the Community Services Teaching Section via phone (02 7920 1042) or email (tafedigital.commserv@tafensw.edu.au).
• When booking an online role-play, students must provide their name, TAFE learner number, and the unit/s the role-play booking is for.
• Once a role-play booking is confirmed, students will receive an email from the Community Services Teaching Section confirming the date
and time of the role-play, the teacher who will be assessing it, the MS Teams meeting link, and brief instructions for using MS Teams.
• Please note that the availability of role-play appointment times can vary from week-to-week and can book out quickly. Students are
encouraged to allow plenty of time when booking a role-play as it can sometimes take 1-2 weeks for an appointment to become available.
Technology requirements:
• Role-plays with a Community Services teacher are conducted live online via Microsoft Teams. MS Teams is part of the Office 365 suite of
tools which is available free of charge to TAFE NSW students. Students can get more information about Microsoft Teams for students here
and information about their TAFE NSW Office 365 account here.
• Students will need a device with a microphone and camera to participate in the role-play.
- A laptop with a camera and microphone or a PC with a webcam and microphone are ideal.
- Mobile phones can often be problematic with visibility and sound, so students are encouraged to use laptops or PCs wherever possible.

Preparing for an online role-play:
• Watch this recording of a webinar, 'Preparing for Role-plays’, which provides guidance and demonstrations on how to prepare for role-plays
and using communication skills in a role-play.
• Before the day of the role-play, students must log into MS Teams to ensure their video and microphone are working and that they have
reviewed all relevant learning materials and assessments.
• Students must come to the role-play prepared and ready to commence on time. If a student is more than 10 minutes late to a scheduled
role-play without notice, the teacher will cancel the role-play and the student will need to re-book.
• On the day and at the time of the role-play, the assessing teacher will start the MS Teams meeting a few minutes before the booking time.
Students must be ready in front of their computer with their camera and microphone on at the time of the appointment.
• The assessing teacher will ask to see the student’s photo ID to confirm their identity. Students must have this ready at the beginning of the
role-play. A suitable photo ID includes a TAFE student card, driver’s licence, proof of age card, passport, etc.
• If a student is unable to attend a scheduled online role-play, they must contact the Community Services Teaching Section by phone on
02 7920 1042 or email tafedigital.commserv@tafensw.edu.au
Important - If a student fails to attend their scheduled role-play and has not notified the teaching section, the student will receive an
“Unsatisfactory” result for the assessment.

Role-play Assessment Criteria

role-play to be assessed as 'competent’ by the assessing teacher.
• All criteria in the Observation Checklists must be met for a student to be assessed as competent.
