Chapter 1
Introductory Statement
Stressor is a prevalent factor to mankind. It is a process of coping that
takes place during the entire lifespan. Stressors are unpreventable processes
that have physical, mental, and emotional aspects of problems. According to
Galloway, Conner and Pope (2013), students who did more hours of homework
experienced greater behavioral engagement in school but also more academic
stress, physical health problems, and lack of balance in their lives.

Introduction

The study is entitled , ” The Impact Of Stressor To Humanities And Social

Sciences Students On Academic Performance” This study was in a quantitative
design. This study aimed to know the level of stress experienced by the impact of
stressors on humanities and social sciences students on academic performance.
Stress is something that causes anxiety or depression.it comes from
schooling, friends or even at home stress is the reaction of one’s body and mind
something that causes a change in the balance.
The level of difficulties inherent in the coursework and exams may
present different stress levels to the students. Although senior high school
students may encounter common stressors in primary level perception of what
are considered as academic stressors may differ. As such the purpose of this
study is to determine the stress levels of the Senior High School Students
particularly the Grade 11 students of San Isidro Senior High School.
Thus, this study needs to embark, stress is a common aspect of many
different emotions like anxiety, frustration, anger ,worry ,fear, sadness and
despair. Some reasons for stress during adolescence are because of disturbed
family dynamics, peer pressure, inability to cope with studies, drug abuse and
lack of competence. Stress is a common factor that largely diminishes individual
morale.
It develops when a person cannot handle their inner and outer feelings.
When the stress becomes chronic or exceeds a certain level,it affects an
individual’s mental health and may lead to different psychological disorders, such
as depression. Depression leads to decreased
energy, difficulty, thinking, concentrating and making career decisions.Students are
a pillar of the future in building an educated society.
For them ,academic achievement is a big goal of life and can severely
be affected if the students fall prey to depression. There can be several reasons
for this:Family issues,poor academics, grades,favoritism,etc.Never -ending stress
or academic performance of students can also be a chief reason .Leading to
depression in students.
There is a high occurrence of depression in emerging countries, and low
mental health literacy has been theorized as one of the key causes of escalating
rates of mental illness. Everyone gets stressed. Whether it’s from financial
troubles, relationships, health, problems,or work, there’s pretty much an endless
list of things that can raise you up and leave you feeling frazzled.
For some people, though, the consequences of stress can show up more
outwardly that it does in others.Although an optimal level of stress can enhance
ability too much stress can cause physical and mental health problems ,reduce
self -esteem and may affect the academic performance of the students knowing
this, researchers have claimed that students do experienced academic stress.
Academic Stress is a type of stress that the students are facing in terms
of managing their time, limit to extended effort,self-expectation and involvement
for the sake of academic performance. In this competitive world every student will
feel the effect of stress at some point of time in their life .Some students feel
more stressed but in comparison to the others, some students feel more
efficiently than others but no one can completely roll out stress from their lives.
Thus stress is an inevitable phenomenon in all aspects of human life.
Senior High Students represents a time for individuals to grow and develop but
the adaptation process is complex and dynamic and involves personal and social
demands. Although some stress is a necessary and an important part of learning.
It can also be harmful to individuals.
Positive stress happens when the situation provides challenge and
growth, and negative stress (distress) occurs when the situation appears
threatening. Students who experience moderate stress perform better than those
who experience minimum or maximum stress. Stress and Depression are major
factors that have been related to the academic, success and persistence of
Senior High Students.
As undesirable, uncontrollable, and unpredictable. Without proper
guidance through stressful situations, students may feel and need to blame
themselves, leading to missing future opportunities and inhibiting their life
experiences.
Students who are depressed also struggle in their studies, relationships,
eating, and substance abuse. Academic stress has been identified as the primary
cause of these alarming figures. (Lee & Larson (2000) explain this stress as an
interaction between environmental stressors, students’ appraisal, and reactions
to the same.
It has now become a grave reality that is termed as a “career stopper”
(Kadapatti & Vijayalaxmi,2012). Depression, anxiety, behavioral problems,
Irritability, etc. These are few of the many problems reported in students with
high academic stress especially in primary level in senior high school ex. Senior
High Students receive stress from multiple sources which can include, but are
not limited to, time constraints, financial strain, academic workload, and
interpersonal difficulties with faculty, peers, and significant others.
Senior High Students can also experience stress from life events, especially
those appearing examinations and tests were also reported to be a major source
of stress for a student of San Isidro Senior High School. Schools have placed
emphasis on the grades of their students having stress and anxiety to produce
good results. Schools, principals, teachers, and communities are judged on their
test scores and student results often drive decisions such as school funding or
student promotions to the next grade level.
This also has a relationship with student competition as each student is
trying to be labeled the best in this very competitive era. Being competitive,
students pressurize themselves to get a high grade without observing
themselves being prey for depression and anxiety until students cannot control
their emotions and feelings.

Background of Study

Stress can have both positive and negative consequences for the
individual. Optimal stress can lead to maximum efficiency, create satisfaction, a
feeling of well-being and accomplishment, and another reward for success.
Students are subject to different types of stressors, such as pressure from
academics with the obligation to succeed in an uncertain future and difficulties
integrating into the system.
Students also face social, emotional, physical, and family problems that
can affect their ability to learn and their academic performance. Too much stress
can cause physical and mental health problems, and low student self-esteem,
and can also affect students' academic performance for students currently at
senior High School level, however, the process is often stressful and frustrating.
results on academic stress.
Relates to students’ Performance can be provided effectively.
Students in secondary and tertiary education settings face a wide range of
ongoing stressors related to academic demands.
Previous research indicates that academic-related stress can reduce
academic achievement, decrease motivation and increase the risk of school
dropout.
This study focuses more on the harm than good stress does to students in
relation to their academic performance at school. It is common for students,
individually or in groups, to interact with their environment, these experiences in
one way or another affect their academic performance.
Students of Humanities and Social Sciences face challenges in their
studies due to the ineffective use of these factors to improve academic
performance.
In this sense, this study seeks to discover the negative impact of stress on
student achievement, the relationship between school stress and students at the
San Isidro Senior High School, the reason being that complex
results on academic stress. relates to students Performance can be provided
effectively.
Students in secondary and tertiary education settings face a wide range of
ongoing stressors related to academic demands. Previous research indicates
that academic-related stress can reduce academic achievement, decrease
motivation and increase the risk of school dropout.
The sum of physical, emotional, and mental straits or tensions of a person
is what stress means. Stress can result from a reaction to a situation in which a
person feels threatened or pressured or sometimes both.
Learning and memory can be affected by stress. Although an optimal level
of stress can enhance ability, too much stress can cause physical and mental
health problems, reduce self-esteem, and may affect the academic performance
of the students.
Academic stress is a type of stress that students are facing in terms of
managing their time, limit to extend effort, self-expectation, and involvement for
the sake of academic performance. With that, the study aims to know the effects
of stress on students’ academic performance at San Isidro Senior High School.
Bernstein et al (2008) define the sources of stress as every circumstance
or event that threatens to disrupt people’s daily functioning and causes them to
make adjustments. These sources of stress are called “stressors”. The academic
journey involves individuals mental, social psychological, financial,
personal commitments and hard work and a lot more.
The journey also involves emotions. The academic environment is filled
with courses and syllabuses whose contents must be covered in a short period.
Fundamentally stress is associated with mental health distress which triggers
physical hypertension, headache, anger, depression, anxiety, stomach upset,
stroke, and other illnesses.
Academic stress can be associated with one’s culture, ethnicity, gender,
age, as well as political inclination, and socioeconomic status. The stages in
academic life trigger stress which can be regarded as academic stress. Includes
educational anxiety, pressure, and stress that are associated with preparing for
assessments, reading, and academic workload.
Stress is a fact of nature in which forces from the inside or outside world
affect the individual, either one’s emotional or physical well-being, or both. The
individual responds to stress in ways that affect the individual.
Students Experience great amounts of stress, whether teenagers or Senior
High School age, in the family or among their peers Most adults have forgotten
what it was like to experience the stress placed on students, but students ride the
roller coaster every day.
A sudden change in life or stressors may affect lifestyle or even his/her
physical and mental health. The impact of stress or leaves on a person depends
on how the person takes the tension. It is hoped that the result of this study will
help students and teachers alike become aware of the causes of stress in
academic performance.
The results of the present study demonstrated that all students of San
Isidro Senior High School had perceived moderate and high levels of academic
stress where more than three quarters of them were under high academic stress
and the rest were moderately stressed.

The most common sources of academic stress identified related to academic

demands, assignments and examinations, high workload, combining clinical work
and interaction with patients, health care team members, and teaching staff.

Theoretical Framework

According, to Porwal & Kumar (2014) stated that there is a lot of stress
related to studies, homework, tests and other academic competitions. The
students also face a lot of stress due to an imbalance of academic, and social
performances and time management for extra-curricular activities from
education.
Academic stress in the students who are unable to maintain a balance
between their academic activities, social, emotional and family. [133].
Stress is the reaction of one’s body and mind to something that causes a
change in the balance of the environment like school, church, or even at home.
The level of difficulties inherent in the coursework and exams may present
different stress levels to the students. (Rafidah, Azizah, Norzaidi, Chong, Salwani
& Noraini, 2009, 37).
Stress is a common aspect of many different emotions like anxiety,
frustration, anger, worry, fear, sadness, and despair.
Some reasons for stress during adolescence are because of disturbed
family dynamics, peer pressure, inability to cope with studies, drug abuse, and
lack of competence. (Ghatol, 2017, 38). Stress is also highly correlated with
social and financial stress. (Pariat, Rynjah, Joplin, & Kharjana, n.d., 40).
It is a result of a wide range of issues, including test and exam burden, a
demanding course, a different educational system, and thinking about future
plans upon graduation. (Ramli, Alavi, Mehrihnezhad, & Ahmadi, 2018, 1). Stress
can really change an individual's feelings or emotions.
(MyersDG, 2005, 86). Shastri (2016) explained that some individuals are
more sensitive or prone to some stressor than others, stress is caused by
environmental and internal demands that need to be adjusted continuously.

Stress can cause an individual to become stressed, feel distressed and

emotional while on the other hand, stress gives motivation and evokes an
individual to be more upholding and persistence in the study in order to reach the
optimum target and achieve further success. (Singh, Sharma, & Sharma, 2011,
152-153).
Although senior high school students may encounter common stressors at
the secondary level, perceptions of what is considered as academic stressors
may differ.
As such, the purpose of this study is to determine the stress levels of the
Senior High School Students, particularly the Grade 12 students of Jagobiao
National High School.
Thus, this study needs to embark, the highly competitive nature of
educational settings often creates academic related stress for students which can
prove to be detrimental to their mental health.
Many students struggle to cope with the pressure and as a result, may
resort to engaging in maladaptive behaviors such as alcoholism or substance
abuse, specifically cannabis and codeine, as a way to escape the reality of their
station.
The impact of stress in young individuals is immensely significant and has
been associated with severe consequences including suicidal ideation.
Stress and anxiety can impair a student's academic performance and
quality of life, which undermines the importance of providing supportive data to
deal with the issue.
The pressure on students to meet academic demands can result in
ongoing stress, which can have detrimental effects on students’ academic
achievement, motivation, and overall well-being.
Academic related stress has not only short-term consequences, such as
reduced academic performance and an increased risk of school dropout but also
long-term impacts, such as reduced opportunities for sustainable employment,
which ultimately cost governments billions of pesos annually.              This
narrative review provides an in-depth analysis of the most recent impact of
academic-related stress on students, including the impact it has on their learning
capacity.
Academic performance, mental health problems, such as depression and
anxiety, sleep disturbance and substance use.
Students often face various challenges that lead to high levels of stress,
some of the most significant everyday issues they encounter are continually
having to study, producing papers, getting ready for examinations, and dealing
with boring lecturers.
The pressure to perform well academically is a major source of this stress,
which involves preparing for data and exams, competing with others for good
grades, and trying to absorb vast amounts of information in a short period of
time. However, excessive or chronic stress can be harmful to students, both
physically and psychologically, perceived stress is a condition of heightened
physical or psychological alertness in response to stressor, which can have a
range of adverse hats on students’ health, including exhaustion, loss of appetite,
headaches and digestives moreover, academic stress has been linked to several
detrimental impacts, such as poor academic performance, increased chances of
illness, and higher rates of anxiety and depression among students.
Perceived stress refers to the reaction of the body of mind to stressors,
which can mandate different forms such as bodily or psychological alertness.
When stress becomes excessive, it can cause a range of health problems such
as exhaustion, appetite loss, headaches, and digestive problems. Among the
various types of stress, academic stress is particularly noteworthy due to its
negative impact on students.
Research studies have shown that academic stress is concerned with
poor academic performance, anxiety, and depression. In academic settings,
stress can result from numerous factors such as academic workload.
The academic performance of humanities and social sciences students is
affected by stressors that can impact specific individuals who lack the necessary
privileges or capabilities to maintain their academic demands.
It is common for them to experience stress from academic workloads,
personal or family issues, and peer pressure. Unfortunately, some students may
not receive adequate support or resources to navigate these stressors.
Working while being a student can be quite challenging as students have
to manage both their academic demands and personal lives on top of the
working responsibilities; many students. Choose to work while studying to
support themselves financially however, not all working students are accustomed
to balancing both tasks at the same time.
Specifically, some working students face difficulties in balancing work and
studies, which can lead to a lot of stress and pressure in their academic
lives. This pressure can take a toll on their overall performance and mental
health.
It is evident that working students face pressure and stress from both
work. This is normally because of the number of commitments they have to
juggle, such as group projects. Reports and work-related issues that are
unavoidable.
If we consider the scenario where a person is working as a food
delivery and also has a homework assignment due, the lack of time and
exhaustion pose a challenge in the situation the person may not be able to
complete the homework on time due to their work schedule.
They may have to use their scheduled free time to complete the
assignment which can lead to stress and failure. Furthermore, exhaustion from
work can also affect their performance in class.
They might lack the energy and concentration needed to participate
effectively inside the classroom.
This situation highlights the difficulties that individuals face when
balancing work and academic responsibilities for fulfilling academic needs.
Stress is an inevitable part of a student's life, and it is triggered by
various factors such as poor time management, looming exams and deadlines,
financial instability, future career thoughts, social media, relationships with family
and friends, and mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
Students experiencing stress may experience negative thoughts, emotions
and other threatening conditions.
Thus, it is important to take measures to manage stress and promote
students' well-being.
A comprehensive understanding of the various stressors and their impact
can go a long way in developing effective coping mechanisms and promoting
academic success among students.

Scope and Limitations

The impact of stressors to Humanities and Social Sciences students on
academic performance tackles the effects of stressors to the grade 11
Humanities and Social Sciences. Students of San Isidro Senior High School. The
research was conducted on... to... of 2023. The objective of this research is to
identify how different kinds of stressors affect the academic performance of
students. The focus group of this research is the grade 11Humanities and Social
Sciences students of San Isidro senior high school that implemented simple
random sampling. This research uses descriptive research design and the data is
gathered through survey questionnaires.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are further defined either conceptually or operationally:

Anxiety when dealing with the demands and issues of daily life,
anxiety is a typical emotion. However, anxiety becomes a problem when these
feelings are uncontrollable, overwhelming, and unreasonable and interfere with a
person's capacity to operate. Phobias, panic, and stress disorders, and
obsessive-compulsive disorder are a few examples of the various types of
anxiety disorders.
Chronic Stress is a persistent, frequently overwhelming sense of
tension that can hurt a person's day-to-day activities. Aches and pains,
weakness, a lack of social interaction, and distracted thinking are some
symptoms.
Depression long-lasting sadness, called depression, might
interfere with day-to-day activities. The risk of developing depression can be
raised by life events like poverty, the loss of a loved one, physical disease, or
abuse, according to research. It is frequently brought on by a combination of
genetic, psychological, and environmental variables. Some people also carry a
genetic risk.
Emotional Health is about our thoughts and emotions. It is about
how we feel about ourselves, how we handle difficult situations, and how we
acknowledge both our own and other people's feelings.
Mental Health involves our psychological, social, and emotional
health. It influences our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Additionally, it influences
how we respond to stress, interact with others, and make good decisions.
Optimal Stress refers to your mental and physical health being in
a balanced state of wellness. The body was created to respond to brief moments
of typical stress, followed by rest times.
Physical Health according to the definition of physical health,
your body's condition, which takes into account everything from the absence of
illness to your degree of fitness, is in good physical condition.
Stress is a typical human reaction that drives us to deal with
problems and dangers in our lives. Everybody goes through periods of stress.
Stressor is a circumstance or incident that stresses us out.
Students often experience stress because of workloads, poor time management,
adjustments to their food and sleeping schedules, and a lack of self-care rest.
Tertiary Education includes all types of formal post-secondary
education, including those offered by public and private universities, colleges,
technical training centers, and vocational institutions. In order to promote growth,
combat poverty, and increase shared wealth, tertiary education is essential.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This study presents a review of related literature and studies as well as

the variables of the study. The review of local and foreign studies on the subject
provided the researcher with empirical findings to enrich the data analysis of
literature.

Foreign Literature

According to Kaumi A. And Alibaba S. (2018), The effect of stress on

students is negative. As a result, many students experience a range of diseases
associated to stress. Stress is a problem on both a personal and a societal level,
according to the report. Among the things which the problem of insurgency
(insecurity), financial, hardships, strikes, carryover on so many courses, and
unfavorable weather conditions all contribute to stress on campus. Exam
pressure and other external factors are not the direct sources of stress; rather,
they have an impact on an individual. An individual’s adaption. The level of
predisposition is determined by an individual’s response.

The study showed that despite studying in a demanding and stressful

environment, Nigerian polytechnic students manage. Without a doubt, investing
in a child’s education is the best investment you can make. Children can avoid
situations that could harm their mental health by attending school alone. Most of
the kids and their families exhibit symptoms of stress, worry, and depression.
Local medical practitioners have observed an interest an increase in the number
of patients seeking psychotherapy. It usually makes things worse for the
youngster when the parents are stressed out as well. Relationships with family or
caretakers should be healthy and positive. Vital for controlling the release of
stress hormones in youngsters and maintaining healthy growth.

According to Pascoe M., Hetrick S. And Parker A. (2020) Students in

secondary and tertiary education settings face a wide range of ongoing stressors
related to academic demands. Previous research indicates that academic-related
stress can reduce academic achievement, decrease motivation and increase the
risk of school dropout. This narrative review presents the most recent research
concerning the impact of academic-related stress, including discussion of the
impact on students’ learning capacity and academic performance, mental health
problems, such as depression and anxiety, sleep disturbances and substance
use.

This study indicates that stress is highly related to academic due to the
needs of students. Many students will struggle with their academic performance,
also because of the lack of time and the many tasks they do, so it turns out that
most of the students are affected, and also because of the lack of enough sleep,
so they can't cope up very well. of the lesson so the result is that their academics
are run over. and because of this they can also have a mental health issue if they
don't take care of it, they can also have a hard time with what they feel.

According to Reddy J., Menon K., and Thatti A. (2018), Stress has become part
of students’ academic life due to the various internal and external expectations
placed upon their shoulders. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the
problems associated with academic stress as transitions occur at an individual
and social level. It, therefore, becomes imperative to understand the sources and
impact of academic stress in order to derive adequate and efficient intervention
strategies.

Most of the students neglect their mental health because they are so
focused on their studies that they don’t pay attention to themselves, which is why
their bodies are weak. Teenagers, like adults, may experience stress every day
and can benefit from learning stress management skills. Most teens experience
more stress when they perceive a situation as dangerous, difficult, or painful and
they do not have the resources to cope. Some sources of stress for teens
include: School demands and frustrations, Negative thoughts or feelings about
themselves, Changes in their bodies, Problems with friends and/or peers at
school, Unsafe living environment/neighborhood, Separation or divorce of
parents, Chronic illness or severe problems in the family, Death of a loved one
Moving or changing schools, Taking on too many activities or having too high
expectations, Family financial problems, Some teens become overloaded with
stress. When this happens, it can lead to anxiety, withdrawal, aggression,
physical illness, or poor coping skills such as drug and/or alcohol use. When we
perceive a situation as difficult or painful, changes occur in our minds and bodies
to prepare us to respond to danger. This “fight, flight, or freeze” response
includes faster heart and breathing rate, increased blood to muscles of arms and
legs, cold or clammy hands and feet, upset stomach and/or a sense of dread.

The same mechanism that turns on the stress response can turn it off. As
soon as we decide that a situation is no longer dangerous, changes can occur in
our minds and bodies to help us relax and calm down. This “relaxation response”
includes decreased heart and breathing rate and a sense of well-being. Teens
that develop a “relaxation response” and other stress management skills feel less
helpless and have more choices when responding to stress.

According to Bhargava D., Trivedi H. (2018), Stress is a condition of

mental pressure for particular individual facing problems from environmental and
social well-being which leads to so many diseases. Young age is the critical
period because at this time youth faces lots of changes in his/her life. They are
expected to be the elites in the society. Found that the stress mainly comes from
academic tests, interpersonal relations, relationship problems, life changes, and
career exploration.

Most of the youth are not able to handle their time management, so they
will struggle with how to start doing things that will take their time. More about
this source text required for additional translation information Send feedback
Side panels They are expected to be the elites in the society. Thus, they should
enhance their stress management abilities so as to live a healthy life after
entering the society. Thus, they should enhance their stress management
abilities so as to live a healthy life after entering the society. When a child enters
into the youth age, they need to not only adapt themselves to the new life and
new environment but also be familiar with many new people, events, and things.
The life stress on them is considerable. Therefore, understanding the sources of
stress among them and how they can cope with the stress is very important. The
researcher found that the stress mainly comes from academic tests,
interpersonal relations, relationship problems, life changes, and career
exploration. Such stress may usually cause psychological, physical, and
behavioral problems. This study finds the causes of stress among youth. So after
identifying causes the researcher suggests that more emphasis can be given to
development stage of child into adolescence.

According to Zara A. (2023), Some psychologists suggest that children

who grow up in low-income or heavily indebted families are more likely to
experience mental health issues in the future. Children claim to experience
tension and anxiety, shame for not being able to help, and embarrassment about
not having the same resources as their peers. Due to this, it has an impact on
their academic achievement.

The ability of parents to teach their children to express their feelings is

important. According to studies on child stress, proactive, upbeat framing can
aid in calming children. Start by describing the circumstances and the course of
action in a calm manner. Use soothing remarks to allay worries and guilt.Any
physical, emotional, or behavioral changes should be brought up with kids by
parents. Then, pay attention to their kid and don’t criticize them when they
express their feelings.

Kaumi A and Alibaba S. (2018) Reiterate that the effects of many

students’ stress are a problem on personal and societal levels according to the
report. Among the things the problem of insurgency (insecurity) Financial
hardships, strikes, carryover on so many courses, and unfavorable weather
conditions all contribute to stress on campus. Pascoe M. Et al (2020).
Emphasizes that Students in secondary and tertiary education settings face a
wide range of ongoing Stressors related to academic demands. Previous
research indicates that academic-related stress can reduce academic
achievement, decrease motivation and increase the risk of school dropout.
Stress becomes part of students, according to Reddy J., Menon K., and Thatti A.,
(2018). Stress is a condition of mental pressure on a particular individual facing
problems from environmental and social well-being which leads to so many
diseases, the study by Bhargava D. and Trivedi H.(2018). Children who grow up
in low-income or heavily indebted families are more likely to experience mental
health issues in the future, according to Zara A. (2023).

Local Literature

According to Pertanika (2020) Academic stress is a general term for various

types of stressors, such as interpersonal, intrapersonal, social, health-related,
and environmental issues that hinder academic development at educational
institutions. Mild stress is said to ignite a person’s drive for hard work and
motivation. However, excessive academic stress that exceeds the coping
mechanisms of students and faculty members can harm their health as well as
their academic and professional development. Uncontrolled academic stress can
have negative physiological, mental, emotional, and physical effects if not
properly managed. This essay gives a thorough analysis of recent studies on
academic stress.

The study contends that academic stress when well-managed, can help in
promoting academic work, elicit good academic outcomes from students and
ensure high professional output from faculty staff in higher institutions.

According to Dolores J. (2019) ‘Social Stratification: The Influence of

Student’s Class System on their Academic Performance’ determined the class
system’s influences on student’s academic performance and to spread
awareness in order to avoid social stratification discrimination. The findings
presented in this paper clearly illustrated that students that belong to the upper
and middle class have the more stable family financial state than that who belong
to the lower class. And that there are negative and positive influences of these
distinct stability from social equality to how they cope up with others and the
presence of linguistic barrier. Other than that the effects which are the disruption
of Psychological Stability, Family Dependency and the struggle.

Many students lose hope because of the discrimination they face, and
with the grades they get, a stress can grow until you have anxiety and
depression and not yourself first, so it’s important to know the situation first
before judge. The majority of students are dealing with a lack of motivation due to
the discrimination they experience and the dissatisfaction they feel about their
grades, which can also induce self-doubt and increase pressure that may result
in depression and anxiety. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the
circumstances before making any judgments and to assist them in coping with
their condition.

According to Agolla (2009), Stress has become an important topic in

academic circles. Many philosophers have carried out considerable research on
stress and concluded that this topic needs way more attention. Radcliff and
Lester (2003) studied the anticipated stress among final year undergraduate
students and acknowledged that class assignments, not enough guidance,
pressure to mingle and to get associated were the reasons for the stress to build
up. McKean et al. (2000) argue that undergraduate students experience higher
stress at expected times in each semester. Academic engagements, financial
pressures and lack of time management skills lead to building up of stress.
Excessive stress can affect well-being, emotional attitude and academic
performance. There upon it becomes essential that undergraduate students
establish methods to deal with stressful situations.

The main source of stress for the students is the inadequacy of right
support. There is a standard evaluation procedure which does not give enough
scope to the students to experiment and push the boundaries to excel. There are
many personal and social factors that lead to stress among students. Lack of
clarity and unavailability of right career counselors lead to directionless goals,
and even after graduating, students are clueless with their careers and are
insecure regarding a job.

Jeanne D. (2019), Social Stratification is a social issue that is inevitable

nowadays. Social Stratification is an effect to different treatment to people from
different classes. Categorization and the difference to treatment based on class
is rampant especially in schools. ‘Social Stratification: The Influence of Student’s
Class System on their Academic Performance’ determined the class system’s
influences on student’s academic performance and to spread awareness in order
to avoid social stratification discrimination. Phenomenological design was used
under qualitative approach wherein the researchers had 6 respondents through
proportional and snowballing sampling and used the experiences of the
respondents in presenting the gathered information. Different references were
used such as articles, books and the internet. The respondents were interviewed
about their experiences and were categorized with the 3 major class systems. All
the respondents were students who came from Ateneo de Davao University –
Senior High School Department. The findings presented in this paper clearly
illustrated that students that belong to the upper and middle class have the more
stable family financial state than those who belong to the lower class. And that
there are negative and positive influences of these distinct stability from social
equality to how they cope up with others and the presence of linguistic barrier.
Other than that, the effects which are the disruption of Psychological Stability,
Family Dependency and the struggle of managing External Factors were
observed.

Many high school seniors are experiencing the feeling of being inferior to
themselves because of the discrimination of the people around them and also
inferiority to themselves. Based on my understanding, the findings of the study
suggest that students from upper and middle-class backgrounds tend to have
more stable family financial situations compared to those from lower-class
backgrounds. This financial stability has both positive and negative influences on
the students. On the positive side, it may contribute to their ability to interact with
others and overcome linguistic barriers. However, it also highlights negative
effects such as the disruption of psychological stability, family dependency, and
difficulties in managing external factors.

According to Luciano R. And Salvatierra M. (2019), Stress is coping

mechanism of the academic scholars from the College of Education (COEd) in
one of the private higher education institutions in Cabanatuan City, Philippines.
This is action research that focuses on the assessment of the academic scholars’
stressors and their correlates. It involves systematic observations and data
collection that enables the researchers to reflect, decide and develop a training
plan for stress management. The findings show that monthly family income and
economic-related stressors were highly correlated. This further explains that
students with high family income are less likely to experience frequent stress. In
contrary, students who belong to low-income families are more prone to
experience frequent stress. In other words, students who belong to poor families
are more vulnerable to stress. Likewise, monthly family income and physiological
responses to stress had high interdependence, which means that students with
higher socio-economic status are less likely to experience severe anxiety, while
students belonging to low-income families tend to experience severe anxiety.
The results of this quantitative analysis served as basis in designing or preparing
the stress management plan for these students.

Based on my understanding this study focuses on understanding the

stress coping mechanism of academic scholars from the College of Education
(COEd) in a private higher education institution in Cabanatuan City, Philippines.
The ultimate goal was to develop a training plan for stress management based
on the findings the study found a significant correlation between the monthly
family income of the academic scholars and their experience of stress. Students
from higher-income families were less likely to experience frequent stress, while
those from low-income families were more prone to experiencing stress. This
suggests that financial constraints and economic-related stressors play a
significant role in the stress levels of students.

Emphasizes the types of stressors, such as interpersonal and

intrapersonal social issues, that hinder academic development. Mild stress is
said to ignite a person's drive for hard work and motivation, but excessive
academic stress that exceeds the coping mechanisms of students and faculty
members can harm their health as well as their academic and professional
development. According to Pertanika (2020), she emphasizes the types of
stressors, such as interpersonal and intrapersonal social issues, that hinder
academic development. Mild stress is said to ignite a person's drive for hard work
and motivation, but excessive academic stress that exceeds the coping
mechanisms of students and faculty members can harm their health as well as
their academic and professional development. According to Pertanika (2020),
stress has become an important topic in academic circles. According to Jeanne
D. (2019), many philosophers have carried out considerable research on stress
and concluded that this topic needs way more attention.

Foreign Study

According to Reddy E. (2018) in their study concludes that stream wise

difference in stress does exist in students. It is important to deal with stress at
personal, social and institutional level. Remedies such as feedback, yoga, life
skills training, mindfulness, meditation and psychotherapy have been found
useful to deal with stress. To identify the main reason of stress is the key to deal
with it. Professionals can develop tailor-made strategies to deal with stress. The
integrated wellbeing of the students is important not only for the individual but for
the institute as well.
Excessive levels of academic stress can result in an increased prevalence
of psychological and physical problems like depression, anxiety, nervousness
and stress-related disorders, which in turn can affect their academic results.
Anxiety as a disorder is seen in about 8% of adolescents and children worldwide.
Anxiety and stress have a substantial negative effect on their social, emotional,
and academic success. Depression is becoming the most common mental health
problem college students suffer these days. It is also a reflection of an
individual’s academic frustration, academic conflict, academic anxiety, and
academic pressure. The four components of academic stress usually identifiable
in a student are academic frustration, academic conflicts, academic anxieties,
and academic pressures. The mental health of students, especially in terms of
academic stress and its impact, has become a serious issue among schools and
policymakers because of the increasing incidence of suicides among students
across the globe. The Lancet Report states that India has the world’s highest
suicide rates among the youth. Parental pressure for better academic
performance is found to be mostly responsible for academic stress. Due to the
constant pushing of the student by the parents in order to perform better in both
academics and extra-curricular activities, some children develop deep-rooted
nervous disorders during their childhood.

Pascoe E. (2020), Suggests Academic stress causes a problem with

students’ sleep patterns, a possibility of students developing depression and
anxiety, and lack of academic achievement. In addition, students display further
physical reactions toward academic stress, including a weak immune system, a
problem with the cardiovascular system, and a lack of attention and
concentration.

Most Importantly, we must get enough sleep. In order for our brain. We
also need to go to bed early, eat wholesome vegetables, and drink a lot of water
to maintain the health of our bodies and minds. Our brains also need
replenishment, and there are many new things to learn. Stress had detrimental
effects which can affect daily living and mental health. Stress had detrimental
effects on physical health, and psychological as well as cognitive effects such as
attention and concentration de cit on academic, Physical effects of stress are
those related to physiological challenges to the body while psychological involve
an individual's perception of life circumstances further stated that effects of stress
directly impact mental health which affects academic performance due to the
effects of stress on recognition. Stress can affect mental health and disrupt a
person's routine. Many negative academic, emotional and health consequences
can affect university students due to the much stress they face. High stress
levels in students are associated with low final grades and bad academic
performance Some of which are anxiety, depression and panic attacks.
Moreover, there has been a well-documented impact for stress on the physical
health of students either by direct and indirect effects. High stress levels are
associated with poorer physical health in students.

According to Scherzinger et al., (2018) A multimethod study (Scherzinger

et al., 2018) showed that about 95% of the observed classroom disruptions
originate from the students. However, since teaching is a reciprocal social event,
it is essential to note that teachers can also contribute to classroom disruptions
through their behavior and action in class

Teachers have a lot to do, perhaps unbeknownst to others who think that
the teacher is just sitting around, but they also have stress because of the piles
of work they do. Academic stress may be the single most dominant stress factor
that affects the mental well-being of college students. Some groups of students
may experience more stress than others PAS scores and responses to the
pandemic varied by the year of study, but not obvious patterns emerge. These
results indicate that academic stress in college is significantly correlated to
psychological well-being in the students who responded to this survey.

Doehring C. (2020), Reiterates that many theological students are in over

their heads with student debt, as the Association of Theological Schools surveys
of graduates attest. The phobia-like nature of financial anxiety makes people
ignore their financial stress, which is now the top stressor in the United States.
Robert Kegan’s in Over Our Heads: The Mental Demands of Modern Life is used
to understand the financial anxiety generated by the ‘hidden curriculum’ of both
our neoliberal market society and the North American academic dream that
promises academic and financial success through hard work. In an innovative
program at Iliff School of Theology, funded by a Lilly Economic Challenges
Facing Future Ministers (ECFFM) grant, selected students in a self-care course
used compassion-based spiritual practices to become more aware of their
financial stress and avoidant coping in the hopes of facilitating more integrated,
complex theologies of financial stress grounded in embodied and relational
goodness. These students continued this theologically reflexive learning process
in courses on financial literacy, leadership, and fundraising (initially for their own
scholarships). At the end of their academic year, they demonstrated decreased
guilt and shame and increased self-compassion about their student debt along
with increased confidence and ability to successfully engage in scholarship
fundraising activities. Collapse.
The financial problem causes stress to most students because they don’t
know where they will get money, so most of them are forced to become working
students.

Hena Y, et al. (2020), highlight the Significant distress has been brought
forth by COVID-19 worldwide. Stress affects everyone, not just adults, and it’s
getting worse. Children of all age groups are affected. Since parents don’t have
the skills or resources to handle their stress effectively, sufficient time to raise
their children correctly. Because it is not just related to physical challenges in
today’s society, stress has become a necessary component of life. Only to
adults, but stress is increasingly having an impact on kids of all ages. The current
COVID-19 condition serves as a factor in elevating pupils’ stress. Stress is
without a doubt the most frequently mentioned obstacle to Academic
achievement.

The physical ramifications of this natural reaction on the body enable us

to handle It more effectively. Various difficulties, like accelerated heart rate and
blood flow. Everyone experiences stress at some point in their lives, regardless
of age, gender, or circumstance, however, it can appear differently for each
person.

Reddy E. (2018) emphasized that it is important to deal with stress at the

personal, social, and institutional levels. Remedies such as feedback, yoga, life
skills training, mindfulness, meditation, and psychotherapy have been found
useful to deal with stress. Pascoe E. (2020) states that academic stress causes a

essential to note that teachers can also contribute to classroom disruptions
through their behavior and action in class. Scherziger et al. (2018) state that
parents don't have the skills or resources to handle their stress effectively or
sufficient time to raise their children correctly. study of Henry Y. et al. (2020).

Local Study

According to Lino P. (2020), Stress is generally thought of in negative

terms, but it can manifest itself positively and negatively. In this study, stress has
a stressor that is merely a stimulus that causes stress. Stressors can be a
multitude of things that worry people most in their life. Stress can also cause
significant problems. Thus, if an individual will not take action, then the stress
response can create or worsen our health problems. To stabilize and avoid being
stressed, the student must talk to a professional advisor to reduce stress and
focus on their academics.

Excessive stress can cause health difficulties such as fatigue, loss of

appetite, headache and gastrointestinal issues. Academic stress has been linked
to a variety of negative effects, including ill health, anxiety, depression and poor
academic performance. Stress is often associated with negative experiences, but
it can also have positive manifestations. In this study, stress is defined as a
response to a stressor, which is essentially a stimulus that triggers stress.
Stressors can vary and are often related to things that people find most
worrisome in their lives. It is important to note that stress can have significant
effects on our health. If an individual does not take action to address and
manage their stress, it can potentially create or worsen health problems.
Therefore, it is crucial for individuals to seek support and talk to a professional
advisor or counselor who can help them reduce stress and maintain focus on
their academics.

Front P. (2022), emphasizes the Impact of academic and familial stress

on students’ depression levels and the subsequent impact on their academic
performance appraisal theory of stress. Between stress, depression, and
academic performance. It was confirmed that academic and family stress leads
to depression among students, negatively affecting their academic performance
and learning outcomes.

It’s important to take care of ourselves. Staying up all night studying or

sleeping all day makes concentrating on studies difficult. Staying in our dorm
rooms all day and night, not going outside, and ignoring friends keeps us alone
and isolated. Getting at least seven hours of sleep at night, eating three meals
each day, and exercising.

According to Labrague, L. (2021) Effects of stress associated with the

pandemic on student life satisfaction and psychological well-being through the
intermediary role of resilience. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)
outbreak has brought additional stress to those students who were already under
high pressure. This has resulted in increased mental and psychological issues in
students.

Many students are suffering during the pandemic, many students are
stuck and many will be abused and have anxiety and depression

According to M. Aafreen, et al. (2022) Stress arises when the combination

of internal and external pressures exceeds the individual’s resource to cope with
their situation. For many young adults, college and school are the best time of
life. These critical years can also be undermined by depression, anxiety, and
stress. Students who do not cope well with stress have a very drastic effect in
their studies and behavior. Materials and Methods: A sample of 80 students were
asked to answer a survey prepared in online. The results were presented
graphically, inferentially, and descriptively. The objective of the current study was
to assess the stress among students of various professional colleges and its
association with various academic, social, and health-related factors. Result:
Students studying in science stream had stress more compared to students
studying in other streams. It affects them mentally, physically, and emotionally.
Students face anxiety and go in to depression which later leads to decreased
performance in academics. Conclusion: Stress is the body’s reaction to a
challenge. This research can help us in finding the reason and the causes of
stress thus helping the students in finding a solution to their problems and help
them enjoy their schooling stress-free and tension-free.

The passage concludes that stress is a natural reaction to challenges and

suggests that the research conducted can help identify the causes of stress. By
understanding these causes, students can find solutions to their problems and
enjoy their schooling experience in a stress-free and tension-free manner
Overall, the passage emphasizes the importance of addressing stress among
students and highlights the potential benefits of identifying and resolving the
underlying causes of stress.

According to Cruz M. (2019) The three hundred eighty-two (382)

students’ coping strategies for academic stress Students using descriptive
research at public and private colleges in Central Luzon, Philippines design. The
respondents’ stress was primarily attributed to their interactions with teachers,
finishing their specifications, and dishonest peers. They reported having trouble
sleeping and academic stress. Moodiness and a lack of confidence. Spirituality
was one of the key characteristics that respondents used to deal with stress.
Among Filipinos. The study emphasizes the importance to adhere to the mental
health regimen and to make provisions for obtaining health for kids with different
hobbies.

Many students lack sleep so it’s only natural if students who like to stay up
late get sick. with the students being careless about themselves it can cause
diseases and it can also affect their academic work which can end up in their
weakness and loss of appetite because of their thoughts and their future stress in
their lives maai they too, lose focus when it doesn't catch them right away.
Reiterates that stress can also cause significant problems. Thus, if a
stress response can create or worsen our health problems, based on the study of
Lino P. (2020), the impact of academic and familial stress on student’s
depression levels and the subsequent impact on their academic performance
appraisal theory of stress, the relationship between stress, depression, and
academic performance, and the effects of stress associated with the pandemic
on student life satisfaction and psychological well-being through the intermediary
role of resilience (2022), stress arises when the combination of internal and
external pressures exceeds the individual's resources to cope with their situation.
(2019) Students coping strategies for academic stress were studied using
descriptive research at public and private colleges in central Luzon, Philippines.
The respondent's stress was primarily attributed to their interactions with
teachers, finishing their specifications, and dishonest peers.

Chapter 3

 Methodology of Research

This chapter we present the research design and the other part of chapter 3
which includes the setting of the study, subject of study, sources of data, and
procedures of the study.

Research Design
Refers to the overall strategy or plan for conducting a research study. It
outlines the methods and procedures that will be used to collect and analyze
data, as well as the goals and objectives of the study. It is important because it
guides the entire research process and ensures that the study is conducted in a
systematic and rigorous manner.

Descriptive Research is used to describe a phenomenon or situation. It
involves collecting data through surveys, questionnaires, interviews, and
observations. The aim of descriptive research is to provide an accurate and
detailed portrayal of a particular group, event, or situation. It can be useful in
identifying patterns, trends, and relationships in the data. (Hassan, 2023)

Research design should be written before conducting any research study. It
is an important planning phase that outlines the research methodology, data
collection methods, and data analysis techniques that will be used to investigate
a research question or problem. The research design helps to ensure that the
research is conducted in a systematic and logical manner, and that the data
collected is relevant and reliable. Ideally, the research design should be
developed as early as possible in the research process, before any data is
collected. This allows the researcher to carefully consider the research question,
identify the most appropriate research methodology, and plan the data collection
and analysis procedures in advance. By doing so, the research can be
conducted in a more efficient and effective manner, and the results are more
likely to be valid and reliable. (Hassan, 2023)

The Impact of stressor to Humanities and Social Sciences and their academic
performance, our correspondent are the students of, San Isidro Senior High
School. The grade level that we conduct the survey is the grade 11 HUMSS.

Setting of the Study

Rodriguez, formally known as the Rodriguez Municipality (Tagalog: Bayan
ng Rodriguez), formerly known and still popularly referred to as Montalban, this
province’s first-class municipality Philippines: Rizal.
It is the province’s northernmost town and follows San Mateo, Rizal, and
Quezon. A city leaving Metro Manila. The community is situated on the Sierra
Madre’s foothills with a 312.70 square kilometer area, it is the largest town in the
province of Rizal. (120.73 square miles) in kilometers. Additionally, it is where the
Montalban Gorge is located. Linked with the Bernardo Carpio Legend. The gorge
is located within a protected area. The Pamitinan Protected Landscape is so
called.
On the south, the municipality is bordered by Antipolo, Rizal, San Mateo,
Rizal, Norzagaray, San Jose Del Monte and Bulacan in the north, Caloocan and
Quezon City in the south, and Bulacan in the general Nakar, Quezon is to the
east, and the west. The municipality is one of the wealthiest in the Philippines,
with a 2016 income of $691 million, came in third place. The town’s previous
name, Montalban, is a translation of the Spanish term Monte (Mountain), in
allusion to the many hills that are present both inside and outside the town. A it
has been the municipality’s official name since its inception, despite being its
current common name. Rodriguez from 1871 until 1982, when the Batasang
Pambansa formally called it Batas Pambansa Building. 275 in memory of
municipality native Eulogio Rodriguez, Sr. Who presided over the Senate.
Mountains may be found in Rodriguez.

A succession of hills, ridges, and valleys run from its north to south. The
town is adorned with mountain ranges. In actuality, they occupy almost 27% of
the town. Both slopes and mountains. Mount Irid, which rises 1,469 meters
(4,820 ft) above the town, is its highest peak. Ocean floor. There are 1,175.8
square meters (12,656 square feet) in the province of Rizal. Rodriguez
compensates 11 barangays make up 26.6% of the entire province of Rizal.
Rodriguez’s business ventures
Include industry and business, such the Avilon Zoo. The geography of the
Municipality of Rodriguez is often fairly rugged, with 83% of its total uplands, hills,
and mountain ranges make up the land area. The additional 17% the
municipality’s southwest corner is made up of low-lying terrain and rolling fields.
Together with the region in the Municipality of San Mateo’s north the Marikina
River Valley’s undulating slopes are where water from higher elevations flows.
On the southwest side of the Marikina River and its tributaries, there is a
drainage municipality. These western lowlands’ elevations range from 10 to 30
meters (33 to 98 feet). Above the sea. The flatlands’ western edge slightly
ascends to the west, which is a section in Quezon City.
The Municipality of Rodriguez’s mountainous areas are located in the
central and in the eastern regions, there are mountain ranges and sleepy sloping
ridges that run from north to south. These mountain ranges have terrain with
slopes between thirty and fifty percent. Really steep hills and mountains have
slopes of at least fifty percent. Rolling to hilly regions with a slope of 18–30% can
also be located. The Tanay, Puray, and Rodriguez Rivers drain these high
altitudes.
