110VAC Uninterrupted Power Supply System (UPS)

figure 1.1
110VAC Uninterrupted Power Supply System (UPS)

• UPS system is an electronic device which maintain a continuous

and conditioned power to the critical loads both during utility
presence or absence.

• UPS mainly comprises of the following:

– Input Filter
– Rectifier
– DC-DC Converter
– Inverter/Bypass C/O Switch
– Battery
– Maintenance Bypass Switch
Different functions of each section of the UPS

Input Filter – It consists of Transient Voltage Surge Suppression (TVSS)

and EMI/FRI Filters to provide surge protection and filter both
electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference
(RFI) at input utility line and keep the sensitive equipment protected

Rectifier – This circuit converts utility AC power to regulated DC power

for use by the inverter while ensuring that the waveform of the input
current used by the UPS is near ideal. The amount of distortion
reflected on the utility is reduced.

Battery Charger – The battery charger utilizes energy from the utility
power and precisely regulates it to continuously float charge the
batteries. The batteries are being charged whenever the UPS is
connected to utility power.
Different functions of each section of the UPS

DC-DC Converter – The DC-DC converter utilizes energy from the

battery system and raises the DC voltage to the optimum operating
voltage for the inverter.

Inverter – It inverts rectifier DC output into precise, regulated sinewave

AC power. Upon a utility power failure, battery supports the inverter
through the DC-to-DC converter. Inverter is always on-line and
continuously generating clean, precise, regulated AC output power.

Inverter/Bypass C/O Switch - The inverter bypass is designed to

transfer the load between INVERTER and BYPASS LINE, and vice-versa.

Maintenance Bypass – The manual bypass is used to by-pass the UPS,

supplying the load directly from the mains in case of maintenance.
Additional Components In UPS System

Battery – Battery supplies DC power to the inverter in case of a short

interruption or a total breakdown of the AC mains supply.

Breakers – UPS output

Transformer – It has two transformer at it’s input and bypass line

Fuse – Rectifier, Bypass, Inverter, Power supply, Meters

Terminals – Input, Bypass, Battery, Output, Dry contacts

Cooling – Exhaust fan

Display – Mimic panel, Alarm LED, Status LED, Soft key

110VAC UPS System ( Operation )
Normal Operation
The rectifier converts the AC input to DC power to supply the inverter and
charge the batteries simultaneously. All the fluctuations, surges and spikes of
the AC input are removed during AC to DC conversion. Therefore, the AC
supplied by the inverter is clean and stable.

Battery Mode
Batteries are connected ON-LINE with inverter. So during power failure, it
supports the inverter without any break and thus the output of inverter does
not experience any interruption and the load is protected.

Bypass(Reserve) Mode
When the inverter is in an abnormal condition, such as over temperature, short
circuit, abnormal output voltage or overloaded for a period exceeding the
inverter’s limit, the inverter will protect itself by transferring the load to
Reserve source without any interruption in the output.
110VAC UPS System ( Operation )
Change Over Operation
Changeover from Inverter to Bypass – The load is transferred without break
from inverter path to bypass path in case of inverter failure or over current
demand by load.
Changeover from bypass to inverter – This transition is required during routine
maintenance of UPS or during trouble shooting of UPS

Maintenance Bypass Mode

In case of UPS maintenance or trouble shooting, where the load cannot be
interrupted, the UPS can be safely taken to maintenance bypass mode. During
this process load is transferred to alternate source without any break in the
output. This also ensures the safety of service personnel.
