SYNTHETIC FIBRES

 Synthetic fibres are made from petroleum

based chemicals or petro-chemicals.
Petrochemicals are subjected to various
chemical processes to obtain synthetic
fibres.
 Due to this, they are called Synthetic fibres
or artificial fibres.
Some of the examples of synthetic fibres are:

Types of  Rayon: It is made from wood pulp. It is also

known as artificial silk as it has
Synthetic fibres characteristics resembling silk.
 Nylon: It was the first synthetic fibre. It is
used in the making of ropes, sleeping bags,
parachutes, different types of clothes, etc.
It is one of the strongest fibres known to us.
Examples of Synthetic fibres

• Following are some of the objects or

things made from synthetic fibres that we
use in our everyday life.
Advantages of Synthetic fibres

 Synthetic fibres are very durable and do not wrinkle easily

 They are elastic and can be easily stretched out
 They are strong and can sustain the heavy load.
 They are soft and hence used in clothing material.
 They are cheaper than compared to natural fibres.
Disadvantages of Synthetic Fibres

 Most synthetic fibres do not absorb moisture.

 Synthetic fibres can be affected if washed using hot water.
 They catch fire easily as compared to natural fibres.
 Synthetic fibres are made of very large units
called polymers.
 Rayon is an artificial silk made up of cellulose
Summary fibre.
 Nylon is made artificially by using raw material
like coal, water and air.
 Polyester is a synthetic fibre.
 Acrylic is artificial wool made from coal, air,
water, oil and limestone.
 Petro chemicals are used to manufacture
synthetic fibres.
