Sophie and her teammates jogged out onto the soccer field. They l ooked
across the field at the gi rls in the bl ue jerseys. Those gi rls were a l ot bigger
than Sophie and her friends. When the game began, Sophie quickly reali zed
that the other team was faster also. The bl ue team moved the ball very quickly
up the field. Three passes into the game, the ball was in the back of the net.
Sophie barely had ti me to reali ze what was happening and her team was
al ready l osing! The rest of the hal f continued in a si milar fashion. By the ti me
the referee blew the whistle to signal a break, the score was 4-0. Sophie and
her teammates trudged off the field.
After a much needed pep talk from thei r coach and a water break, the
gi rls headed back out for the second hal f. Right as play began, so did the rain.
It was coming down in buckets. Sophie’s friend Josie recei ved the ball and
i mmediately sli pped and fell on her face! Sophie couldn' t help it, she started to
laugh. The giggles seemed to be contagious and traveled through her whole
team. Soon the gi rls forgot they were l osing and began to have fun! With
about three minutes left in the game, Sophie had a di rect shot at the goal and it
went in! Sophie and her whole team slid into a messy puddle to celebrate the
goal. After the game, they walked off the field in much better spi rits and
seemed to remember that winning isn’t everything.

GRAMMAR
Vivid Verbs Layered Booklet: Each
student gets three verbs for their booklet.
Students make their layered booklet by
arranging the pages shortest to tallest and
stapling at the top. Students order their
verbs from the weakest to strongest.
Then, students write sentences under the
flap with the verb in a sentence.
Verb Flapbook: Students make their
flapbook by folding on the dark line and
cutting on the dotted line. Students color
code the synonyms first. Then, students
put the weaker verbs under the Verb 1
flap. Students put the stronger synonym
under the Verb 2 flap.
“Shades” of Meaning: Students make their
sunglasses. Students choose two verbs
that are synonyms to write on the outside
of the shades. They could also write the
two words in sentences.
Koala Lou’s Verbs: Students cut out the
squares on the dotted lines. On the top
rectangle, students write a synonym for
the verb, but it must be stronger.
Students glue under the rectangle into
their spiral or onto a piece of paper.
Under the flap, students write the verbs in
sentences.
Victorious Verbs: Students read the
sentences and choose the verb that best
competes the sentences. Students should
be looking for more vivid verbs to
complete the sentences.
