B. Lesson Proper (35 minutes)

- Let’s start our lesson by having a recap

of what are the two basic elements of a
sentence.

- The two basic parts of a sentence are

the Subject and Predicate.

- Subject can be a noun or pronoun; the

predicate can be an adjective but most
of the time it is a verb.

- The subject is the doer or the one that

is being talked/ focused on while the
predicate is the one that describes the
action of the subject.

- Again, what is Subject? Who can tell

me again what the subject is?

- Yes, (Name)
Ma’am! I know the answer.

Subject is the one that is being

talked/focused on the sentence.

- How about the predicate?

Ma’am! I know the answer.

- Okay, Go on (Name)
Predicate is the one that describes the action
of the subject.

- Very good!
Thank you, Ma’am!

- Today, we are going to Identify the

basic rules on subject-Verb Agreement,
select appropriate rules in each
sentence and you will construct your
own sentence using the correct subject
verb-agreement rule.

- Now, let’s go to the first rule.

- Can someone read the first rule that is

in the material?

- Yes?
Singular nouns take singular verbs!
- Very good, (name)
Ma’am! I know the answer.
- In short, in rule number one, Singular
nouns take singular verbs.
- Again, what is the first rule?
- Read the examples, class.

● She cries hard because her dog died.

● My mom cooks my favorite dinner.
● Kelly drops the ball to the ground.
● He grills the steaks for dinner.
● It makes a sound.
● The girl tastes the soup.
● She is funny.
● Ezra reads Wattpad.
● Dana eats hotdog for breakfast.

10.The sun shines on the flowers.

11.Eloisa plays online games.

In example number 1, Which one is the

subject?
She!
● How about our verb?

● The teacher explains the sentences. Cried, Sir!

Usually, we add s to the word to make it
plural, right?

Yes, Ma’am!
● But in Subject verb-agreement, we add
S to the verb to make it singular and so

that it will agree to the singular noun.

● Again, in rule number 1, what we will
do to make the verb singular and make
it agree to the singular noun??

We add S to the verb, Ma’am!

● Can someone give me an example?

● Yes, Julie? Me, Ma’am!

● Very good, Julie! Aden writes short stories.

Thank you, Ma’am!

Now let’s have the second rule:
● If the subject is plural, the verb
must also be plural.
● Again, what is the second rule?
Since, we said that in Subject verb
agreement nouns and verbs must
agree in number, in rule 2 if you have
more than one subject or plural noun,
you must also make the verb a plural.

● Are we clear, class?

● If in rule one we add s to the verb to Yes, Ma’am!

make it singular here in rule 2, we let
the verb remain on its base form.
● Understand, class? Yes, Ma’am!
Examples:
● The grizzly bears hunt the salmon
from the river.
● They grill the steaks for dinner.
● The cats drink milk.
● They love to water the plants every
morning.
● They make a sound.
● The girls taste the soup.
● They are funny.
● We are celebrating Foundation Day.
● Teachers grade the papers.
● In the forest the birds sing happily.

Anyone can tell me what is rule 2?

Me, Ma’am!

Yes?

If the subject is plural, the verb must also

be plural.

Now, let’s move on to the last rule we’re going

to tackle.

Rule number three: When the subject of

the sentence is composed of two or
more nouns or pronouns connected by
and, use a plural verb.

Here, in rule number 3 the sentence is

connected by the AND it will use a plural verb,
just like these examples.

● And these are the examples for rule

number 3:

● Shayna, Illea, and Ianna go to the

house of their grandmother.

● The doctoral student and the

committee members write every day
● The principal and the faculty members
plan an exciting event on Foundation
Day.
● Andrew and Kiel are good friends.

● She and her friends are at the fair.

● She and Nikko brought a dog.

● Now, can someone give me an

example?

● Yes, Sarah?
Me, Ma’am!
● Excellent, Sarah

● Practice!
Kim and Dan are best friend.
Write one sentence in every rule.
Thank you, Ma’am!
Use the word Kick.

Application
Make an example sentence in each rule of
the subject verb agreement that we have
discussed.

● Evaluation

Direction: Choose the correct verb from the

parenthesis that will complete the sentence.

1. Diana ___________ (recite, recites) her

poem beautifully.

2. The teacher and the parents ________
