Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course, Grade 12

Course Outline
This course is designed to help students acquire and demonstrate the cross-curricular literacy
skills that are evaluated by the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). Students who
complete the course successfully will meet the provincial literacy requirement for graduation.
Students will read a variety of informational, narrative, and graphic texts and will produce a
variety of forms of writing, including summaries, information paragraphs, opinion pieces, and
news reports. Students will also maintain and manage a portfolio containing a record of their
reading experiences and samples of their writing.

Course start date: March 10, 2023


Course end date: May 30, 2023
All material must be completed and submitted by this point.
You are welcome to complete the course material before the end date.

Key Information
1. This course will use both short and long texts to support your learning.

b. We will be using a platform called Common Lit (see details below)

2. There will be a close out activity in which you will be asked to apply your learning about
reading for information, and writing for precision.
a. Product 1: News report (300-500 words)
b. Product 2: Opinion essay (500-750 words)
