Experiment 1
Colour code of resistors and verification of series and paralel
combinations of R. C.

Aim: Colour code of resistors and verification of series and parallel combination of R,
C.
Objectives:
1. To learn the Resistor colour code
2. To determine the stated value of a resistor by interpreting the colour code
Indicated on the resistor.
3. To verify series and parallel combinations of R, and C using voltage and
current division rule.

Equipment required:
1. Carbon Resistors.
2. Digital multimeter.
3. Breadboard and Wires.
4. DC power supply (Vs) and Function Generator for AC power Supply.
Circuit dlagram(a): Resistor comes in 4, 5 or 6-bands. A 6-band resistor is shown In
Fig. 1.

For Series com'bination of Rand C, verify V = V, + V2 + VJ, R... = R,+R2+RJ, and C.eq =
C1C2C3/(C1C2+C2CJ+C2C1).

Vs V R,

Theoretlcal calculations:

R1=9740.

R2=32350.

R3=21830.

IN SERIES COMBINATION:

Rs=63910.

l=V/Rs V1=0 .762v

1=5/6391 V2=2.53v

I=782.35µA V3=1 .707v

V1 +V2+V3=4.999v =Vs.

THIS MATCHES WITH PRATICAL VALUE.

IN PARALLEL COMBINATION:

l=V/Rp 11=5.13mA

1=5/557.372 I2=1.5455mA

I=8.9707mA I3=2-291mA

I1+I2+I3=8.9665mA =I

THIS MATCHES WITH PRATICAL VALUE.
