Dayanne: Today my partner and I are going to show a home improvement project that our NGO has been

developing in Peru. Our

motto is: If you need to fix some problems at home, why not fix them yourself? I think you should fix it yourself. I have some ideas
about what you should do. Our NGO provides them with all the materials and training they need.

Alex: At first, many families didn’t want to participate in our projects; they thought we
showed their private life, but the truth is that we only show the home improvement
photos and short interviews in our online journal. Some responses from people were:
Don't bother me, or my house problems are no one else's business. But after a while, they
started to believe in us.

Dayanne: For example, this is a finished project in Cerro de Pasco, Peru. It took us two days to get there from Lima. This family lives in
poor conditions, has many children, and needs help because the first frosts of winter are already arriving.

Alex: We started to ask the family what problems they had. They told us that their roof
had holes, that your sink wasn't installed, or that they didn't have a laundry.

Dayanne: Then, we ask them: Have you thought about repairing your home problems yourselves? They answered that
they didn't know about new materials or that they needed help installing some fixtures. Alex, could you tell us about the
improvements we made?

Alex: First, We worked with the exterior of the house. The main doors were repaired. The
walls were repaired and painted. The roof was replaced with plastic tiles.

Dayana: Then, we worked with the kitchen and the living room. A lot of objects were rearranged. A sink was installed.
The walls were repaired and tiled. The family's favorite color was white, so the tiles were white. The floor tiles were
changed. All the improvements were great ideas for them.

Alex: Third, we worked on the bathroom and the laundry. A lot of objects were
rearranged. Then, the house's water supply and drainage system were installed. The
toilet, sink, and shower were also installed. The walls were built, painted, and tiled. A
washing machine was purchased online and installed.
