Memorial Day- No Internship

Tuesday, May 30th

Today I spent almost all of my time reading through the emergency plans for that aspect

of my project. In the eleven different emergency plans, I was looking for any mentions of

resources and how they are managed. There are ten different sections that have to be mentioned

in order for the Gwinnett County Office of Emergency Management to keep their accreditation,

and those are storage, maintenance, testing, identification, location, acquisition, mobilization,

distribution/ dispatching, tracking, and demobilization. After identifying all of theses within the

different plans, I put them all into a Microsoft Word document to give to Stephanie, who is in

charge of resource management at the office, so that she can look through them and we can talk

about what needs to be changed/ updated. She also informed me that she has a few upcoming

planning meetings that will correspond to the plans I have been looking at and that she would

like me to join her in. There is not an official date set for those yet, but she informed me that it

would be before I complete my internship.

Wednesday, May 31st

Today I worked on updating the Hazard Mitigation plans for the county with Ashley, who

is the Hazard Mitigation Emergency Management Specialist in the office. The first thing she did

was show me the entire plan, which takes up almost two whole binders, but when she started

explaining it to me, I understood why. The hazard mitigation plan for the county also

incorporates all of the city’s hazard mitigation plans as well. With this information she explained

that according to both state and federal requirements, the county has to update their hazard

mitigation plans every five years, and since the next plan has to be completely updated by the

beginning of 2025, she has decided to start on the updates. I thought this was kind of early, but

she also informed me that she has to assist all of the city’s individual Emergency Management

personnel to make sure they are meeting all of the state and federal requirements.

Thursday, June 1st

Today I worked with Ashley again to update the county’s Hazard Mitigation Plan. I also

attended my first Office of Emergency Management (OEM) staff meeting. This meeting lasted

for a little over an hour and a half, and essentially everyone on the team goes through what they

have been working on and what they have coming up. At the end of meeting, we all just sat and

talked about different things that were going to be happening around the county soon and/ or in

the future that the OEM would be invited to or has been asked to come speak at. There are a few

different meetings with fire stations around the county to talk about certain hazards, such as train

derailments, but as of right now that will be after my time here is complete. I do hope that I will

be able to attend at least one of these meetings before I complete my internship.

Friday, June 2nd

Today I worked on the same thing to help Ashley with the Hazard Mitigation plan

because part of the team was out of the office getting Forklift Operator Certified. I asked why

they were getting certified to operate forklifts and they told me it was because of the large

warehouse that holds the stockpile of PPE. In the warehouse I noticed everything was divided up

onto palettes, and to move these around they would need to use a forklift. With some of them

being busy doing that all day, I offered to do more with the Hazard Mitigation plan to try and

help out where I can while Ashley was getting certified.
