Weekly Journal #1

This summer I am interning at the Gwinnett County Office of Emergency Management in

Lawrenceville, Georgia. My first day is set for Monday, May 15th and I will be reporting at 8:30

AM. For this week before officially starting my internship, I have been looking into the

Emergency Management Office and seeing what events and other things they have done in the

past so that I am as prepared as possible on my first day.

I have been in communication with my supervisor this week in regard to which building

at the Gwinnett County Police Headquarters I am reporting to and what to expect overall from

my first week. In our emails he invited me to join him at a conference this upcoming Friday, May

19th. The conference is hosted by the Region D Healthcare Coalition, and consists of a network

of different healthcare organizations, providers and regional partners in Gwinnett, Rockdale,

Newton, Dekalb, Clayton, Fayette, Fulton, and Forsyth counties. The conference is called the

“Region D Healthcare Coalition Radiation Conference” and will be in Decatur from 8:00 am-

4:00 pm. In my research on this conference, I found that we will be attending a regional response

presentation by the Georgia Poison Center and the Southern Regional Disaster Response System

(SRDRS.) After the presentation there will be discussions on various topics to do with radiation

response as well as tabletop exercises. I believe this conference will help me get an outside view

of response to emergencies as there are many different organizations attending this conference,

as well as help me to start making professional connections.

I am very excited to start this internship, as I know this is what I want to do after I

complete graduate school, and I believe this will help me form professional connections, as well

as increase my knowledge on various topics within Emergency Management. In terms of

reaching my minimum hours, my supervisor and I do not foresee any challenges in getting all of
2

my hours, as there are many after-hours meetings and events that I will be invited to attend and

assist with.

**My first official day is Monday, May 15th, but I have put the hours log here for assignment
