Metacognitive Reading Report # 1

Title of Article: THE PHILIPPINE CHINESE BEFORE 1850

Name: Elijah Ethanli D. Escondo Date: June 15, 2022

1. Three (3) Things that I significantly learned from the readings

• I discovered that the Spanish government was strict and focused on the
country's social standing, and they have divided the people into four groups:
Spanish, Chinese, Indio, and finally the mix chinese mestizos, and this status
may affect the amount of tax you will pay; harsh taxation on the Chinese
began, and the indios became involved. As a result, forced labor occurred.

• I've learned that the Spanish only allowed the Chinese to work freely
throughout the country because they saw them as a threat to their colony.

• I learned that the Spanish government could not simply let go of the Chinese
since they contribute significantly to our country in markets, industry, and
trade. The Spaniards want a share of the Chinese revenues but were unable
to do so directly, so they acted as a middleman in trades and marketplaces in
order to become economic partners.

2. Three (3) Things that are still unclear to me

• • The Spanish government separated people based on their cultural

differences in the same way as the Romans did, but the term indio
refers to a slave.
• It perplexes me that the Spanish government continues to criticize
Chinese people while also seeking to persuade them to support them..
• The Spanish government separated people based on their culture but
still indio refers to a slave

3. I used to think that….

The Chinese had such a large impact on our economic market and culture.
They just contributed to the selling of their goods and meals in the
Philippines. I used to believe that mestizos were just white people whose skin
became red. However, I am aware that they had a huge impact on our
culture, helping to shape the Filipino identity.

4. Three (3) questions that I want to ask about the readings

• What are the differences and significance of each race in terms of their
way of life?
• If the Spaniards force the Chinese and Indians to labor and be slaves,
why don't they form an alliance and drive the Spaniards out of the
country?
• Why Did the Chinese not join the Filipinos because of the past attack on a
Chinese hamlet?
