How do teachers perceive the use of conventional versus digital storytelling activities in

English Language classroom?

 Do you know what is digital storytelling?

~ YES, I do. Digital Storytelling is about using technology to tell a story.

 Can you tell how is digital storytelling differ from the conventional one?

~ Digital storytelling is more interesting with a variety of colorful materials compared to

conventional which requires teachers to be better at telling stories to attract students to

listen to the storytelling they want to tell.

 Do you like digital storytelling? Why?

~ YES, the reason for my student’s digital storytelling is a new thing that they need to

learn and feel like students in urban areas who have long mastered it.

 Have you ever adopted conventional storytelling in your English Language class?

If yes, can you describe how you conducted the activity? If no, why haven’t you?

~ Yes, I have been using conventional storytelling methods for a long time but more to the

teacher who tells the story and the student only as a listener.

 Have you ever adopted DIGITAL STORYTELLING in your English Language class?

~ Yes, there are several times also using digital storytelling method. I use a lot of time also

to prepare each digital storytelling for use in the classroom. I use software like movie

maker or the simplest use of power point slides software.

~ YES
 Can you share with me some potentials of DIGITAL STORYTELLING which relate the most

to you in your daily work as ESL teacher?

~ Digital storytelling can be used to reinforce subject matter, to share an experience or

present some new information in a creative and interesting way. It can be used as

homework, classroom group projects, or a holiday project for students

 Do you have any intention to adopt DIGITAL STORYTELLING in you ESL classroom

considering its potential?

~ YES

 Considering your current situation, which one do you prefer to adopt in your ESL classroom

between conventional and digital story telling? Why?

~ I will use both methods because both have their own advantages and disadvantages.

However, digital storytelling is more interesting for students to learn. After all, students

are now more exposed to technology and smarter than teachers.


2. What are the challenges teachers facing in adopting digital storytelling in English

Language classroom?

 Do you think DIGITAL STORYTELLING is suitable to be adopted in your ESL classroom?

Why?

~ Yes, to attract students, teachers need to be more creative and use the latest methods in

line with the interests of students who are more exposed to technology and smarter than

teachers.

your ESL classroom? Why?

~ Yes, the world of education today is very challenging. As a teacher I need to study

and will learn to give the best exposure to my students.

 Do you think you have sufficient skills to adopt DIGITAL STORYTELLING in your

ESL classroom? Why?

~ Yes, I am really good at making digital storytelling for my students. It may not be

as great as others but it is enough to let my students learn by using this method.

 Motivation:

 Do you think DIGITAL STORYTELLING can help you to achieve your lessons’

objectives? Why?

~ Yes, but after using storytelling several times. For first time use it is quite

difficult to achieve the learning objectives because the students are difficult to

accept but after almost two months using this method then my students can accept

it and learning in the classroom is easier.

 In what way do you think DIGITAL STORYTELLING can help you in your job as a

teacher?

~ Digital storytelling at the beginning of use is quite confusing because it requires

patience to give understanding to students but after students get the right
understanding and guidance then it is very easy for teachers to work during

teaching in the classroom.

 In what way do you think DIGITAL STORYTELLING can help your pupils in ESL

classroom?

 ~ I think this digital storytelling helps my students a lot in terms of pictures of

various colours and movements and sounds that can be modified.

 Of all the stages in teaching and learning process, in what stage (s) DIGITAL

STORYTELLING gives you most challenges?

~ The most difficult step is when it comes to presenting the work. Can students

produce the work we want.

 Planning DIGITAL STORYTELLING classroom is the most challenging part. Do you

agree?

~ Students need to record the audio in a quiet room, collect music tracks and shoot

or collect videos that they are going to use. They may want to do some interviews to

make the story even more interesting and interactive. They may also rehearse

telling the story verbally and record it. You may experience a few technical

difficulties when you start, and that’s all part of the learning process.

 Learners’ factor:

 Do you think your pupils are ready for DIGITAL STORYTELLING classroom?

If yes, why do you think so?

~ No.

If no, please share what are the aspects that they are lacking of.

~ Not all students have the tools to gadget digital storytelling. Broadband facilities

are quite limited for some students in my school.

 Time factor:

 Do you think DIGITAL STORYTELLING classroom will consume more time than any

other teaching techniques? Please explain.


~ Maybe Yes and maybe not because it depends on where we are. If we are in an

area that has internet facilities and complete equipment needed to implement

digital storytelling then there is no problem for that but if we are in a rural area

like me then it is quite limited to implement digital storytelling. Can be

implemented but requires more effort and craftsmanship than teachers.

 Physical factor:

 Do you think there are enough facilities in here to conduct DIGITAL STORYTELLING

classroom? Please explain.

~ Not enough because not all places are supplied and given real exposure on digital

storytelling because in my own school there are still some teachers who are still

unskilled about it.


3. To what extent do the teachers perceive changes in their pupils’ anxiety level after

participating in digital storytelling activities?

 Please explain your pupils’ responses when you gave them DIGITAL STORYTELLING tasks?

~ For the first time the response from the students was a bit slow but after a few times the

response given was quite satisfactory.

 During the video production process, did any of them giving-up? Why?

~ Usually, broadband problems and materials are needed and guidance from teachers as

well as need to be given encouragement and encouragement for them.

 Please share how did you motivate them to accomplish their tasks.

~ Usually gifts are used as a backup as the best motivation for students

 After completing the tasks assigned, do you think these activities/ tasks has helped them in

reducing their anxiety towards English Language?

~ Yes, because most of the selection of materials used or searched in broadband uses

English. So they will use the dictionary and also google translate to give their

understanding.

 Based on your observation, please explain their anxiety level at the initial stage, while

producing the video and after completing the assignment.

~ Pupils' anxiety are more about the use of grammar and also the material to be presented

is in accordance with what is required.

 If they were given the second assignment on digital storytelling, do you think they can do it

better? Why?

~ Yes, students will perform their tasks better if given proper training and guidance.

 Do you think the adoption of DIGITAL STORYTELLING in ESL classroom will motivate

your pupils to learn English? Why?

~ Yes, students are more motivated with moving and colourful images than the use of

books
 Do you think the adoption of DIGITAL STORYTELLING in ESL classroom will reduce your

pupils’ anxiety towards English? Why?

~ Yes, it can reduce anxiety if supplied with appropriate reading according to their level of

understanding and age.

 Will you adopt DIGITAL STORYTELLING in your ESL classroom again in the future? Why?

~ Yes, because digital storytelling will be able to help students' interest in learning new

things not only English but for my students in rural areas they can learn a lot and

discover.
