Use of Abrasive Wheels


Misuse of abrasive wheel continue to result in accident, often because the wrong type of
wheel is fitted

To the Supervisor

• Wheel must only be fitted or replaced by an authorized and trained person.


• Only reinforced discs should be use on hand held machines
• Ensure that all guards are correctly fitted and used.
• Provide suitable PPE to the operatives.
To the Operatives

• Make sure that you use the right disc for the job.
• Visually check wheels before use for any obvious fault, any doubt, get verification:
 Inspect the disc for cracks and defects before mounting. Suspend
the disc on one finger and tap it gently with something non-metal.
If the disc does not give a clear ring, then get rid of it.

 Check the expiry date of the disc.

 Check if the disc is mounted correctly.


• Be aware of other workers in the area – do not expose them to risk.
• Eye, ear and hand protection should always be worn.
• Machine speed must never exceed the maximum permissible speed of the wheel.
• Don’t exert heavy pressure on wheels.
• Don’t use the sides of wheel.
• Keep fingers clear of cutting edge of wheel
• Only reinforced discs should be use on hand held machines.
• Run replacement wheel for a full minute prior to using them ensuring you stand
well clear.
• Always stop wheel when not in use.
• Keep the face of the wheel evenly dressed.
