Worksheet 3:
DELEGATION

CASE STUDY
As a nurse manager on the Labor, Delivery, Recovery and Postpartum Unit (LDRP), you have
decided to gave the unit clerk responsibility for the unit's staffing, including finding
replacements for sick calls because of a sudden influx of clients in active labor.

INSTRUCTIONS:
After you read the case study, kindly answer the following questions briefly and direct to
the point:

1. Identify the steps of the delegation process?

As previously discussed, the steps in the delegation process are as follows: selecting the
appropriate task, selecting the appropriate person, establishing clear objectives, and
implementing, monitoring, evaluating, or reviewing the performance.

2. Differentiate the concepts of responsibility, accountability and authority?

Authority is the power delegated by senior executives to assign responsibilities to all

employees in order to improve their performance while the Responsibility is the obligation to
complete a given task. Accountability makes a person responsible for his or her work based on
their position, abilities, and strengths. Delegating responsibility is possible. It is possible to share
responsibility, but not to delegate it.

3. Explain the type of delegation that the nurse manager used in this
situation?
The type of delegation used by the nurse manager based on the case scenario was informal
delegation due to the occurrence of an informal delegation under the given circumstances.
This is a perfect example of a situation in which a person may perform a task not because it is
their obligation, but because it is necessary for them to do their job.
4. Discuss whether the supervision was appropriate to the task by the
nurse manager?
The unit clerk is not responsible for staffing the unit, including finding replacements for sick
calls in response to a sudden influx of clients in active labor, because, as discussed
previously, staffing is primarily the responsibility of the nurse managers. Given that these
responsibilities are too much for the on-duty unit clerk, it is possible that this is an instance
of excessive delegation. They are only responsible for managing patient records and
preparing paperwork for their colleagues.

5. Did the nurse manager delegate appropriately to the unit clerk's abilities?
Why or why not?
The nurse manager did not delegate tasks commensurate with the capabilities of the unit
clerk. As I recall from our discussion, prior to delegating a task, it is necessary to know what
to delegate as well as their abilities, strengths and weaknesses. However, as far as the unit
clerk's responsibilities go, it is not their responsibility to do staffing.
