questions

Explain the process

The process is SIMPLE DIFFUSION

The concentration of glycerol molecules in the extracellular fluid is higher than that in the cytoplasm of
the cell.

Glycerol molecules diffuse from the extracellular fluid through the phospholipid bilayer into the cells by
SIMPLE DIFFUSION

The movement of these molecules is down the concentration gradient

It does not require energy.

Based on the diagram, explain how water enters a cell from the extracellular fluid (4)

Water enters the cell by the process of OSMOSIS

The concentration of water molecules in the extracellular fluid is higher than that in the cytoplasm of
the cell.

Water molecules diffuse from the extracellular fluid through the phospholipid bilayer into the cells by
osmosis

The molecules move down the concentration gradient

This process does not require energy.

Facilitated diffusion using channel protein

The process involved is facilitated diffusion

The concentration of chloride ions is higher in the extracellular fluid than in the cytoplasm of the cell.

Chloride ions diffuse & move through the channel of the channel protein into the cell.

The ions move down the concentration gradient.

No energy is required for this process.

Facilitated diffusion using a carrier protein

The process involved is facilitated diffusion

The concentration of chloride ions is higher in the extracellular fluid than in the cytoplasm of the cell.

Chloride ions diffuse & move through the channel of the channel protein into the cell.

The ions move down the concentration gradient.

No energy is required for this process.
