UNIT 1: FRIENDSHIP

LESSON 1: READING
I. OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:
1. Language competences
❖ Knowledge:
- recall the pronunciation of topical language
- know some qualities of a good friendship
- understand reading passages about friendship
❖ Skills:
- skim reading passages for main ideas
- scan reading passages for details, specific ideas
- guess meaning in context
- determine if a certain person can become a good friend
3. Attitude:
- convince people of the importance of a close friendship
4. General Competences
- Self-control & independent learning: perform individual tasks
- Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups to perform tasks

II. TEACHER AND STUDENTS’ PREPARATION:


1. Teacher’s preparation:
- Lesson plan, power point, markers, and teaching materials.
2. Students’ preparation:
- Study materials.

III. PROCEDURES
1. Activity 1
a) Aim: Arousing students' interest in the topic.
b) Content: The song "You've got a friend"
c) Products: Students' drawing out the theme of the song.
d) Steps:
- T asks students to listen to the song without opening their book
- Ss listen to the song individually
- Ss discuss the theme of the song with their partners
- T observes Ss’ discussion, asks for their answers and gives feedback.
2. Activity 2
a) Aims: activating background knowledge and motivating Ss to read
b) Content: Ss’ writing down on the board words/phrases related to the topic
c) Products: Ss’ words/phrases
d) Steps:
- T the board by writing:
A good friend A bad friend
- Ss form two lines standing behind each other.
- T uses 2 colored markers so T knows which team wrote what.
- The first student at the front of each team gets the board marker.
- 2 students move to the board and write one word related to the topic on the board, then
pass the marker to the next students in their team and go to the back of the queue.
- The 2 teams compete to write as many words as possible on the board in 3 minutes.
- The team with the largest number of appropriate and correctly spelled answers wins!
3. Activity 3
a) Aims: helping Ss focus on the main idea of the text and understand it better
b) Contents: task 2 – page 14
c) Products: Ss’ correct answer
d) Steps:
- T asks Ss to work individially to complete task 2
- T asks Ss underline the first sentence in each paragraph.
- Ss exchange their answers with partners.
- T asks 1-2 Ss to give the answers – the others listen to and give comments.
- T gives feedback.

a) Aims: helping Ss focus on the details of the text and understand it better
b) Contents: task 3 – page 15
c) Products: Ss’ correct answer
d) Steps:
- T asks Ss to work in pairs to complete task 3
- T asks Ss underline the words/phrases related to their answers in the text.
- T asks 1-2 Ss to give the answers – the others listen to and give comments.
- T gives feedback.

4. Activity 4
a) Aims: helping Ss understand the text further
b) Content: Ss’ talking about qualities of a good friendship
c) Products: Ss’ mind map and a short talk about the topic
d) Steps:
- T asks Ss to work in groups of 4 and create a mind map about qualities of a good friendship
- Ss summarize and transfer the information from the passage to their groups’ mind maps
- T calls each group to present in front of the class – other groups give comments
- T gives feedback
