Teenager: Good morning, can we book a room, please?
Receptionist: What type of room?
Teenager: With four beds, please. There are four of us.
Receptionist: We have a vacancy on the second floor, with a street view.
Teenager: Well, our friend John has some trouble sleeping, so we’d prefer a quieter
room.
Receptionist: I can give you one with the pool view, but it’s a bit more expensive.
Teenager: That sounds great. How much is that one?
Receptionist: €40, breakfast included.
Teenager: And if we want it for full board?
Receptionist: Then it is 85€ per night.
Teenager: OK, that’s fine.
Receptionist: How long are you going to stay?
Teenager: Five nights.
Receptionist: Right… now, I just need to ask you a few questions, so that I can fill in
this registration form. Could you give me a name to book the reservation under,
please?

Man: Joan Lang, you’re from a Switzerland…. And you’ve just come back from
Hamburg, in Germany… What were your first impressions of Hamburg, the University
of Applied Sciences and their study programme?
Girl: My first impression was quite good. Before going there, I had already swop emails
with Miss Schulz and Miss Weatherall, so I wasn’t totally unprepared for the unknown.
The university facilities and organisation are good. It’s just a pity that their computer
system isn’t all that great. You see, you cannot print at school. So, as an international
student, it’s not all that easy to get one’s work done on time, but I hope things will
improve with the opening of the new Information Department. The study programme
is really good. There are lots of courses or projects to choose from. It was not easy to
choose which classes to go to. There were many interesting options to choose from. I
had some difficulty, I must confess. However, as far as the time plan is concerned, all
that I really have to say is that, it was not easy to read and understand at all.
Man: Did you get support finding accommodation?
Girl: Well, yes. Their support for finding accommodation is good and useful. They
found me a room next to the school. The big advantage is that you don’t have to find a
place to live in all by yourself. As you can imagine, this could be rather difficult in a city
and a country you don’t know at all. It also means that you can go to Hamburg with the
assurance that you have a place to live as soon as you get there. It’s more relaxing
really!
Man: What kind of accommodation did you get, and were you happy with it?
Girl: My room was good. It was in the Berliner Tor Residence. There were four of us
sharing two bathrooms and one kitchen. We had someone who came once a week to
clean the kitchen and the bathrooms. The building was quiet, nice and modern, but the
fees were expensive (322,50 Euros) which was way higher compared to the other
student residences.
Man: How did you cope with the German language?
Girl: I had some problems at the beginning dealing with the rhythm of the language.
The two-week German course that I took before the semester was very useful. I was
able to practice it slowly before I had to use it in lessons and in everyday life. However,
it was always easier for me to understand it than to speak, but I never stopped trying
even when I didn’t speak it all that well. Also, the German students and professors
were very patient and understanding. They sometimes spoke slower or explained
things to me by using different and not so difficult terms and words.
