Module 2 PS Questionnaire

Discuss at least two common refrigeration systems. Differentiate the technologies. Mention their
advantages and disadvantages.

Mechanical-Compression Refrigeration
Systems
Air conditioning and commercial and industrial refrigeration both make use of mechanical compression.
This kind of cooling system is typically installed by HVAC companies

This kind of system transfers heat by mechanically compressing refrigerant into a cold liquid at low
pressure and expanding it at high pressure into a hot gas. When pressure is applied or removed,
refrigerants function. They boil and become gas when they absorb heat, but when they release that
heat, they return to their liquid state. A mechanical-compression system uses a refrigerant that boils at
40 degrees to remove heat from warm indoor air.

Advantage:
Evaporative Cooling
To provide cooling for machines and structures, evaporative cooling systems employ the same concept
as perspiration. A cooling tower is a heat-rejection device that uses water cooling to expel heated air
from the cooling tower into the atmosphere. The phrase "cooling tower" refers to both open and closed
circuit heat rejection equipment in the HVAC sector.

Heat is created in an HVAC system by the sun shining on the building, computers, and humans. The heat
is collected up by the air handlers, which are linked to the refrigerant indirectly via multiple heat
exchangers. The heat causes the refrigerant to convert from a liquid to a vapor.

Advantage:

Efficient use of energy

One of the primary advantages of evaporative cooling systems is that they use far less energy than a
regular air conditioner. In reality, an evaporative cooler uses 50% to 75% less power than an air
conditioner.

Disadvantage:
Consequences of High Humidity

Although low humidity might be harmful to your health, overuse of an evaporative cooler causes
moisture accumulation, which promotes the growth of mould, dust mites, and mildew in enclosed
spaces. Overuse of an evaporative cooler can cause asthma, allergy problems, or a disease known as
hypersensitivity pneumonitis if the humidity level increases. It is critical to remember that a badly
maintained evaporative cooler may quickly turn into a breeding place for mosquitoes and viruses.
