Introduction to Biomechanics 781.521

Biomechanical Principles Project

Due date: 22/9/2023 via Turnit-in MIT Canvas (in Word or PDF format)

Assessment weighting: 40%

Learning outcomes assessed:

LO2: Demonstrate knowledge of terms and concepts regarding the description of human motion, forces and
fundamental movement patterns.

LO3: Apply the systematic approach to skills analysis to a skill from the student’s own sport

Assessment overview
For this assessment task you are required to:

 Select an exercise that is of interest to you.

 Answer the questions below in paragraph format using the provided subheadings (each week 3
questions will be related to that weeks lecture) in relation to your chosen exercise.
 Make sure to use your own voice.
 Uses references to show where you found your information.
 Use the APA 6th referencing style (MIT library provides support and you can helpful guides on their
website).
 If a calculation, show your full working and answer with appropriate units.

Formatting
Your document should be accompanied by a completed MIT cover sheet. It should be written in 12 point Arial
fonts. It should be typed with 1 ½ spacing throughout with one inch (2.5cm) margins all around. Pages should
be numbered consecutively, beginning with the title page as page 1 and ending with the appendix pages
(reference pages if appendices are not included). When writing your document appropriate grammar and
spelling should be used. APA 7th referencing style should be used in your document.

Page allocation
One (1) page for the MIT cover sheet and 1 page for the title page
Three (3) pages are allocated for the body of the report. Any material over the 3 page limit may not be
assessed.
Unlimited pages for references and appendices (you may want to provide a picture).
Biomechanical principles project: Questions

Answer the following questions in paragraph format in relation to your chosen exercise:

Introduction
1. Describe the purpose of the exercise.
2. Describe the movement of the exercise.
3. Describe the main muscles used in the exercise

Biomechanical principles of exercise

 Muscle mechanics
4. Describe the type of muscle contractions occurring during the movement.
5. List the ways a muscle may increase the total tension it can produce.
6. In relation to the Force Velocity relationship describe what may occur during the concentric phase of
your exercise if you altered the velocity of the movement and state why this may occur.

 Linear kinematics
7. In relation to linear kinematics describe the type of motion that occurs with your exercise.
8. Perform one phase of the exercise and solve for the displacement of the movement (provide working
and units).
9. For this phase work out the velocity of the movement (provide working and units).

 Linear kinetics
10. Perform your chosen exercise selecting an appropriate mass to lift. Assuming that you are
accelerating at the speed of gravity, how much force are you producing (provide working and units)?
11. Perform one phase of your chosen exercise, how much Work are you performing (provide working
and units)?
12. For this phase work out how much Power you are producing (provide working and units)?

 Quantitative and qualitative analysis

13. When training someone performing your chosen exercise what qualitative cues could you use and
why?
14. When training someone performing your chosen exercise what quantitative measures could you take
and why?
15. Describe the role biomechanics may have within exercise prescription.

Reference list
 Provide a reference list following APA 7th formatting of references cited in-text.
