What is Speech?

Speech is the physical production of sounds. These sounds (consonants and vowels) are produced in
sequences to create words. Producing speech sounds involves the muscles, nerves and brain working
together to plan and execute movements of the tongue, lips, palate, and jaw. According to Merriam
Webster, speech is defined as a spoken expression of ideas and opinions that is made by someone who
is speaking. Speech is the ability to speak or the act of speaking which includes meaning,
pronounciations, translations and In other words, the definition of speech is that it is the power of
expressing or communicating thoughts by speaking. Speech is the general word for a discourse delivered
to an audience whether prepared or impromptu.

Speech impairment, also called communication disorder or voice disorder is a condition in which
one has trouble forming sounds. Speech impairment’s vary from occasionally not being able to produce
sounds to not being able to produce sounds at all.
