Trouble of the suction valve in the fuel pump.
Section Chief K. Sasaki
Drawn By S. Okamura
ENGINE TYPE S26MC-Mk5 • L/S35MC-Mk6, 7 • S42MC-Mk6, 7
Second revision : P. 3 ~ 5 Adjustment of suction valve and wear limit.
The suction valves and puncture valves, which ensure the engine stopping performance and
starting performance, are equipped on the top of the fuel pumps in each unit since S26MC-Mk5,
L/S35MC-Mk6 and S42MC-Mk6 type engines delivered.
We have recently been informed from some ships in service about the main engine problem caused
by the trouble of the suction valve. That must have been caused by the fuel oil treatment, such as
improper heating temperature, and/or poor homogenizing of fuel oil during changeover.
We would hereby inform you of the case on the basis of our service experiences which should be
carefully noted by your ship.

1. Differences of the fuel pump between new type and former type.
PUNCTURE VALVE
SUCTON VALVE
BARREL
PLUNGER
During engine standstill, suction valve is kept open by the pilot air and fuel oil will not be injected in
spite of plunger stroke.
During engine running, suction valve is being active by the discharge of pilot air and fuel oil will be
injected corresponding to the upward movement of the fuel pump.
2. In case of stuck of the suction valve.
2.1 When the suction valve has stuck, fuel oil pressure in the fuel pump will not be increased up to
the injection pressure because the valve will not be closed completely.
2.2 The corresponding unit will not have combustion, like cylinder cut running, with appearance of
hunting and vibration.
2.3 The roller guide of the corresponding unit will change to the opposite direction due to decrease of
self lock force caused by a lack of sufficient force having worked to the plunger downward from
the increased fuel oil pressure because the roller guides are positioned against camshaft
rotation.
