Causes and Level of Truancy among Primary School Pupils: A Case Study
of Adjena United Basic School, Akosombo-Ghana
Abstract— The purpose of the study was to identify the causes and level of truancy among basic school pupils of Adjena United
Basic school in Asuogyaman District, Ghana. The research design used was a case study design. A simple random sampling was
used in selection of pupils from the primary classes in Adjena United Basic School. The sampling technique was purposive and
it was used to sample a population 120 of pupils from a target population of 90. Questionnaire was used to collect data. The
study revealed that causes such as the perspectives of students showed that they agreed to pupils that, peer group pressure is the
most rated cause of students’ truancy. On the whole, there was a high level of truancy among pupils in Adjena United Basic
School. Again, the regression analysis showed that there was effect of truancy on academic performance of pupils in Adjena
United Basic School. Based on the findings, it is recommended that counselling pupils effectively must be done by the
management of the school to understand background of pupils and thereby placing value and instilling confidence into the
