Advent Scriptures and Song

.
Compiled by Mindy Jeppesen from Eric Huntsman’s Good Tidings of Great Joy

Advent does not just remember Jesus’ first coming. It celebrates his presence and importance in
our lives now while also helping us look forward to his Second Coming.

First Sunday of Advent: Hope

~ We look forward with hope to Jesus’ Second Coming
Jacob 4:4-5 For, for this intent have we written these things, that they may know that we knew of
Christ, and we had a hope of his glory many hundred years before his coming; and not only we
ourselves had a hope of his glory, but also all the holy prophets which were before us. Behold,
they believed in Christ and worshiped the Father in his name, and also we worship the Father in
his name.
Moroni 7:41 And what is it that ye shall hope for? Behold I say unto you that ye shall have hope
through the atonement of Christ and the power of his resurrection, to be raised unto life eternal

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

O come, O come, Emmanuel, O come, O Dayspring, come and cheer,
And ransom captive Israel, Our spirits by thine advent here,
That mourns in lonely exile here, Drive away the shades of night,
Until the Son of God appear. And pierce the clouds and bring us light.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel. Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free O come, o come Thou Lord of might,
Thine own from Satan's tyranny; Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai's height,
From depths of hell Thy people save, In ancient times didst give the law
And give them victory o'er the grave. In cloud and majesty and awe.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel. Shall come to thee, O Israel.
Second Sunday of Advent: Love
~ The love that God has shared with us in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ. This love is also
found in Christ’s love for us.

1 Nephi 11:21-22 And the angel said unto me: Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Son of the
Eternal Father! Knowest thou the meaning of the tree which thy father saw? And I answered
him, saying: Yea, it is the love of God, which sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of the children
of men; wherefore, it is the most desirable above all things.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Moroni 7:47-48 But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever…wherefore, my
beloved brethren, pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this
love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ.

O Come, All Ye Faithful (verses 1-2)

1. Oh, come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant!
Oh, come ye, oh come ye to Bethlehem.
Come and behold him, Born the King of angels;
Oh, come, let us adore him; Oh, come, let us adore him;
Oh, come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord.

2. Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation;

Sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above!
Glory to God, Glory in the highest;
Oh, come, let us adore him; Oh, come, let us adore him;
Oh, come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord.

O Holy Night (final verse)

Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother;
And in His name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name.

Christ is the Lord, then ever! ever praise we!

His pow'r and glory, evermore proclaim!
His pow'r and glory, evermore proclaim!
Third Sunday of Advent: Joy
~ We anticipate with joy Jesus’s Second Coming

Isaiah 12: 2-3 Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord
JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. Therefore with joy
shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.

Joy to the World

1. Joy to the world, the Lord is come; 3. No more will sin and sorrow grow,
Let earth receive her King! Nor thorns infest the ground;
Let ev’ry heart prepare him room, He’ll come and make the blessings flow
And Saints and angels sing, Far as the curse was found,
And Saints and angels sing, Far as the curse was found,
And Saints, and Saints and angels sing. Far as, far as the curse was found.
2. Rejoice! Rejoice when Jesus reigns, 4. Rejoice! Rejoice in the Most High,
And Saints their songs employ, While Israel spreads abroad
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains Like stars that glitter in the sky,
Repeat the sounding joy, And ever worship God,
Repeat the sounding joy, And ever worship God,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy. And ever, and ever worship God.

Fourth Sunday of Advent: Peace
~ The Peace the Jesus brings into the world that we then share with others.

Mosiah 15:18-20 And behold, I say unto you, this is not all. For O how beautiful upon the
mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that is the founder of peace, yea, even
the Lord, who has redeemed his people; yea, him who has granted salvation unto his people; For
were it not for the redemption which he hath made for his people, which was prepared from the
foundation of the world, I say unto you, were it not for this, all mankind must have perished. But
behold, the bands of death shall be broken, and the Son reigneth, and hath power over the dead;
therefore, he bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto
you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

It Came upon the Midnight Clear

(verses 3-4 of the original, not in the LDS Hymnal)

3. Yet with the woes of sin and strife 4. And ye, beneath life's crushing load,
The world has suffered long; Whose forms are bending low,
Beneath the angel-strain have rolled Who toil along the climbing way
Two thousand years of wrong; With painful steps and slow,
And man, at war with man, hears not Look now! for glad and golden hours
The love-song which they bring; come swiftly on the wing.
O hush the noise, ye men of strife, O rest beside the weary road,
And hear the angels sing. And hear the angels sing!
