Accomplishment Report on Project NES

(Numeracy Enhancement Strategies)

Learning to count at an early age is an important skill that a

kindergarten learner needs to acquire. Numeracy skill will help them greatly
as they move forward in their learning as it is considered a basic skill
needed by a kindergartener. Researchers have found a child’s math
knowledge at the beginning of kindergarten predicts latter achievement
better than early reading or attention skills.

Developing a classroom-based intervention program that aims to

intensify learners’ numeracy level in kindergarten has been conducted and
implemented throughout the school year. This intervention program entitled
Project NES which stands for Numeracy Enhancement Strategies comes
with different activities intended to help struggling learners to learn
mathematics better. Learners were first evaluated from the beginning of the
school year using number recognition flashcards, number writing activities
and other counters to assess their knowledge in numeracy. Singing rhymes
through audio-visual presentations were also conducted to ensure that the
learners were able to master counting numbers 1 to 20, can identify shapes,
can solve simple problem solving in addition and subtraction and be able to
tell time. Those learners who lag behind in numeracy skills were identified
as participants in the remediation program. Their parents were also
informed to ensure that they are assisted at home using the activity sheets
prepared by the teacher. Other home activities include counting materials
which can be seen at home or in school such as cups, spoons, rocks,
Popsicle sticks, etc.

Participation and collaboration of persons involved in this program is

the key to its success. The willingness to participate will greatly help the
learners to step up their numeracy level in order to catch up with the other
learners. Through continuous implementation of remediation activities,
these learners successfully met the intended competencies they need to
acquire. Though there are 3 learners who remained in the beginning
category due to habitual absenteeism, they are then included in the summer
math camp implemented by the school. This is to ensure that they are ready
to step to the next grade level.
