Assignment 3
__________________________________________________________________________
Date assigned: 09/30/2020

This assignment is based on this week’s lecture: Transmission lines

Q.1 In order to allow one to utilize a lumped circuit analysis one must obey the rule:
td<< 0.01 T. Where T and td are the respective signal period and time delay. What
frequency must a signal have if the transmission line is 1 km long? Assuming v=c.

Q.2 You are working as a test engineer in a company. Your supervisor has asked you to
construct a circuit. In your circuit you have one resistor that is 1 cm long. This length
includes the metal lead. You are using a signal that originates from a function generator
whose frequency is 12 GHz. Assuming that the speed of wave propagation is equal to c.
c=3x108 m/s.

a.) What is the wavelength of the signal?

b.) Compare λ/2 and the length of the resistor?
c.) Is lumped circuit analysis appropriate for your circuit? Justify your answer.
