PREPARATION OF BILL OF QUANTITIES

Amaquants Associates 2
Building and Engineering Standard Method of Measurement, 4th
Edition (Revised) BESMM4(R)
The preparation of Bill of Civil Engineering Works can be done by the
Quantity Surveyor who is specifically trained on how to do it.

The person preparing the Bill should consider the following:

q The cost of the tangible construction to be done (permanent works)

q The cost associated with the adverse conditions under which some of
the work would be executed such as bodies of water, banks of rivers
or sea coast, low-lying marshy land etc.

q The cost of temporary work or plant

Amaquants Associates 3
This is important because a truly useful Bill of Quantities (BoQ) should
reflect the nature of the work proposed and the circumstances under
which it will be executed.

For the preparation of BoQ, 26 classes of Civil Engineering works are

available in BESMM4(R) eg. Class 2A - General items, Class 2B - Ground
Investigation etc.

AREAS OF COMMON SHAPES IN CIVIL ENGINEERING WORKS

In the preparation of Bill for Civil Engineering works especially for items
measured in m, m2 and m3, different shapes are encountered and the
determination of the lenghts, areas and volumes of these figures
respectively are necessary to get the exact quantity of the materials
involved in the work. The common shapes encountered include:

Construction Site Earthwork Calculation

Earthwork Analysis
q Take cross-sections (typically 25m)
q Plot natural ground level (existing cross section)
q Plot proposed grade profile (proposed cross section)
q Indicate areas of cut and fill
q Calculate volume between cross-sections

Amaquants Associates
31
COLLECTOR 02 - (ROAD)
Volume Calculation Methods
The three most common methods to estimate cut and fill volumes are:
ü The cross-section method or Average end area method
ü The grid method
ü Using specialist software

Cross-section method
The cross section method involves plotting cross sections of the existing
and proposed levels at regular intervals across the project site. For each
of the cross sections, the cut area and the fill area is determined. The
volume between each pair of sections is estimated by multiplying the
average cut or fill area of the two sections by the distance between them.
Once these volumes have been calculated for each pair of sections the
total cut and fill volumes are obtained by adding them all together.
Amaquants Associates
32
COLLECTOR 02 - (ROAD)
Average End Area Method
q The Area between the existing ground and proposed ground is
calculated at each cross-section
q The Area between two consecutive cross-sections is average
q The Area is multiplied by the distance between two cross-sections

An example of calculating the volumes between two sections. This

calculation is repeated for all of the sections, and the values are
added together to get the total cut and fill volume.
Section No Cut Area (m2) Fill Area (M2)
2 4,572 4,358
3 2,565 5,906

Amaquants Associates 33
COLLECTOR 02 - (ROAD)

Average cut Area = 4,572 + 2,565 = 3,568m2

2
Average fill Area = 4,358 + 5,906 = 5,132m2
2
Distance between sections = 25m
Cut volume = 25 X 3,568 = 89,200m3
Fill volume = 25 X 5,132 = 128,300m3

Amaquants Associates 34
COLLECTOR 02 - (ROAD)
GRID METHOD
The grid method involves drawing a uniform grid into a plan of the
earthworks project, and taking off the existing and proposed ground levels
at each node of the grid. With these values the average depth of cut or fill
required on each cell of the grid is calculated, and the volume for each cell
is obtained by multiplying the depth by the cell area. By adding the volumes
for each cell together the total cut and fill volumes for the project can be
estimated.

The cut or fill depth for each cell is found by substracting the average
existing level of the cell from the average proposed level. If the resultant
depth is positive then this is a fill cell, while a negative value indicates a cut
cell. In either case, the volume is calculated by multiplying the cut or fill
depth by the areas of the grid cell.
Amaquants Associates 35
COLLECTOR 02 - (ROAD)

Example of calculating the volume of one of the grid cells

This calculation is repeated for all grid cells, and the values added
together to get the total cut and fill volumes.

SOFTWARE
Modern computer software allows earthworks volumes to be calculated
quicker and more accurately than either of the two manual methods
described above. There are a number of software products available for
this purpose. These products vary greatly interms of complexity and price.

The first stage of producing an estimate using software is to import the

existing terrain. Once this is done the proposed terrain is drawn and the
software automatically calculates the cut and fill volumes required.

Cutting and Embankment (Collector Road 02)
INITIAL CALCULATIONS FOR DIMENSION
Cross-section Area/Average end Area
Since the cross-sections of Collector Road 02 are of fairly regular shape,
trapezoidal rule is used for the calculation of areas and volumes. However,
for an irregular cross-section, compute the cross-section area by dividing
in into triangles and trapezoids.

CH 0 + 000 (Cut)
Step 1: Calculate the depth (depth at centre of the road)
Deduct Ground level from Grade level. The resultant is depth. A negative
resultant indicates Cut. A positive resultant indicates Fill.

Amaquants Associates 59
PART - 4 - EARTHWORKS (Cont’d)
q Grade level = 397.650m
q Ground level = 398.110m
q Depth at centre = - 0.460m (Cut)

Step 2: Calculate the Top width

v Top width = Bottom width + 2 X Spread of banks.
v Spread of bank (at each side) = 2 X Depth (Slope 1:2)
v Top width = Bottom width + 4 X Depth
v Top width = 46m + (4 X 0.46m) = 47.84m

Amaquants Associates 60
PART - 4 - EARTHWORKS (Cont’d)

Step 3: Calculate the Cross Sectional Area (1/2(A+B)XH)

q Depth at centre (H) - - 0.46(Cut)
q Top width (A) - 47.84m
q Bottom width (B) - 46m
q Mean width - 46.92m
q Cross-section Area - 46.92 X 0.46m = 21.58m2 (Cut)

q Grade level - 387.837m
q Ground level - 387.551m

Step 2: Calculate the bottom wide

v Bottom width = Top width + 2 X Spread of banks.
v Spread of bank (at each side) = 2 X Depth (Slope 1:2)
v Bottom width = Top width + 4 X Depth
v Bottom width = 46m + (4 X 0.286m) = 47.144m
