AGREEMENT

Learning Outcomes
• Describe the purpose for the creation of Kyoto Protocol and the Paris
Agreement
• Understand the highlights of Annual Conference of Parties (COP) for
the implementation of Kyoto putting emphasis on the agenda and
agreements per conference.
• Explain the importance of the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement
in climate change adaptation

INTRODUCTION
Climate change adaptation refers to actions that reduce the negative
impact of climate change, while taking advantage of potential new
opportunities. It involves adjusting policies and actions because of
observed or expected changes in climate.

Adaptation can be reactive, occurring in response to climate impacts, or

anticipatory, occurring before impacts of climate change are observed. In
most circumstances, anticipatory adaptations will result in lower long-term
costs and be more effective than reactive adaptations.

KYOTO PROTOCOL
The Kyoto Protocol was an international treaty which extended the 1992 United
Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change that commits state parties
to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, based on the scientific consensus that
global warming is occurring and that human-made CO2 emissions are driving
it.

• Recognizing that developed countries are principally responsible for the

current high levels of GHG emissions in the atmosphere as a result of
more than 150 years of industrial activity, the Protocol places a heavier
burden on developed nations under the principle of “common but
differentiated responsibilities”

• It was adopted in Kyoto, Japan, on December 11, 1997, and entered into
force on February 16, 2005.
