1. What are the salient points in Nightingale’s environmental theory that made its impact on the
practice of nursing? Site an example if you need to.
Nightingale believed that “Healthy surroundings were necessary for proper nursing care.”
Thus, with her environmental theory came the salient points that made its impact on the
practice of nursing. Namely, the clean water and air, effective drainage, cleanliness and
light.
A. Clean air - to keep the air as pure as the external air without chilling the patient. For example,
proper ventilation in constructed buildings especially in the hospitals.
B. Clean and pure water - dirty water can cause diseases. For instance, a provision of clean and
pure water for bathing, washing and drinking is essential in every household.
C. Effective drainage - effective drainage is a key to have a basic sanitation in one’s home. For
example, a proper sewage and drainage system of a household is a requirement.
D. Cleanliness - the greater part of nursing consists in preserving cleanliness.
E. Light - especially direct sunlight is helpful in treating diseases.
These salient points made its impact in the practice of nursing as this made an evolution to
an effective delivery of care by implementing a clean environment that is beneficial to our
health.

3. Using the concepts of environmental theory, relate the observations you have in your family and
community
According to Nightingale’s Environmental Theory cleanliness is very important to keep the
household and community clean and healthy. But this will only be achieved through
conscious efforts, consistent observations and actions in implementing these.
