CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Socioeconomic status (SES) encompasses not just income but also educational

attainment, occupational prestige, and subjective perceptions of social status and social

class. Socioeconomic status can encompass quality of life attributes as well as the

opportunities and privileges afforded to people within society. Socioeconomic status

was defined as having three dimensions: family income, parents' education level, and

parents' occupational prestige. This definition has been widely used in academic

research, and the present study used it to measure family SES ability and to explore the

possible mechanisms of these factors.

Children's academic performance is impacted by inadequate education and rising

dropout rates, which maintains the community's low SES status. Increased research on

the relationship between SES and education is crucial because it may assist to lower

some of these risk factors by improving school systems and early intervention

programs. Prospective college students from low-SES backgrounds are less likely to

have access to informational resources about college (Brown, Wohn, & Ellison , 2016).

Additionally, compared to high-SES counterparts, young adults from low-SES

backgrounds are at a higher risk of accruing student loan debt burdens that exceed the

national average (Houle, 2014).

It is widely recognized that if learners are to maximize their potential from

schooling, they will need the full support of their families. Attempts to enhance familial

involvement in education occupy governments, administrators, educators and families'

1
organizations across all over the world. It is anticipated that families should play a role

not only in the promotion of their own children's Achievements but also more broadly in

school improvement and the democratization of school governance.

The specific objectives of this study were intended to: Assess the extent to which

families' level of education influence Senior High School Humanities and Social

Sciences (HUMSS) Students in Academic Performances in the area under the study.

Determine the extent of which the family sizes affect Senior High School Humanities

and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Students in academic performances in the area under

study. Identify the effect of family income on Senior Highschool Humanities and Social

Sciences (HUMSS) Students in academic performances in the area under the study.

Compare the significance effect of familial level education, family income, and family

size in academic performances in the Senior Highschool Humanities and Social

Sciences (HUMSS) student.

Research Locale

This research locale contains the place where the study is to be conducted

whereas this research will be conducted at the vicinity of Oriental Mindoro National High

School. The Oriental Mindoro National High School (OMNHS) is the flagship campus

and the largest public high school in Oriental Mindoro. It was established in 1921 and is

in San Vicente East, Calapan. It offers high school education from grade 7 to grade 12.

It also offers different tracks like Academic tracks, Sports track, Arts and design and

TechVoch. The school is headed by Dr. Nimrod Bantigue. It was formerly named Jose

J. Leido Jr. Memorial National High School and now called Oriental Mindoro National

High School.

primary inputs are Family Socioeconomic Status (SES) in terms of educational

attainment of parents and parent’s income status in relation to the Academic

Performance of HUMSS Student in OMNHS.

Another box contains the HUMSS Students which is represented by their

General Weighted Average as the Level of their Academic Performance.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research study aims to identify the factors that affect the Family Socioeconomic

Status to HUMSS Students in OMNHS towards their Academic Performance.

Especially, it strives for answers to the following questions:

1. What is the Family Socioeconomic Status in terms of Educational Attainment of

parents and parent’s income status?

2. What is the level of Academic Performance of the students?

3. Is there a relationship between family socioeconomic status and academic

performance?

STATEMENT OF THE HYPOTHESIS

There is no relationship between Family Socioeconomic Status and Academic

Performance of the Students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study provides information about the Academic Performance of the Students

that is affected by their Socioeconomic Status, and how they improve their Academic

4
Performance despite their state in life. The findings and results of the study will be

beneficial to the following:

TO THE STUDENTS - Knowing how the family socio-economic status will affect their

academic performance will help them to create a way so that their status will not

become a problem in life. They will know how to strategize and come up with an idea

that will help them so that their state in life will not affect their academic performances.

TO THE TEACHERS - As a teacher, knowing the problems of their students regarding

their family Socioeconomic Status that affects their students’ Academic Performances

will help them to come up with ways that are consistent with students of low

Socioeconomic status.

TO THE ADMINISTRATION - It will help them to know what they need to provide for

those students with low Socioeconomic Status who cannot afford to buy necessary

school materials.

TO THE PARENTS - The findings will make them eager to earn more so that they could

provide the needs of their child so that their academic performances will not be affected

by their status in life.

TO THE FUTURE RESEARCHERS - This research will provide related information that

they can use in conducting their own research related to the effects of family

Socioeconomic status to the Academic Performance of the students.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The study focused on determining the factors affecting the Academic

Performance of the HUMSS students in Oriental Mindoro National High School for the

Socioeconomic Status affects the Academic performance of the HUMSS students in

OMNHS, School Year 2022-2023.
