Coping Mechanisms to Improve the Numeracy Competency of the Tagjaguimit
National High School Students.

INTRODUCTION

In academics, numeracy is the fundamental underpinning of education and gives

students access to valuable numeracy ideas. Numeracy has an important role in

enabling and sustaining cultural, social, economic, and technological advances. If

the foundation of numeracy is not mastered, and the building blocks of numeracy not

developed, students will struggle to make necessary connections within the content

material are fully understand higher-level numeracy concepts. Learning numeracy,

made students improve their attitude towards numeracy.

Numeracy is the ability to understand and work with numbers and it is included in

education. In understanding the specific issues related to the students in their coping

mechanisms in learning numeracy. It is beneficial for the students especially when

they have a problem in numeracy.

Finding results of this study showed that regardless proficiency level. Taking down

notes, spending time for review, sitting near the front, and listening attentively were

primarily the coping styles of Tagjaguimit National High School Students in learning

numeracy.
Significance of the study

This study focused of what are the coping mechanisms for the challenges of

numeracy competency in Tagjaguimit National High School students. Moreover, the

results of this study will be a great benefit to the students.

This study aims to know the coping mechanisms in learning numeracy of the

National High School students in Tagjaguimit. Learning numeracy is important for

students because they can recognize the numeracy it is. It included the significance

that students experiencing these difficulties but at different intensity levels. On the

other hand, students learned to cope with the challenges individually.

The students in Tagjaguimit National High School move through their years of

schooling, students are exposed to numeracy understanding, problem-solving, and

reasoning. There is also evidence that other areas of development, such as

resilience and perseverance, support achievements in numeracy.

In the process of coping mechanisms, there are different kinds of decisions that can

affect their academic performance and might lead to the failure of a student. Some

students use strategies aimed at achieving in learning numeracy by doing work, help

seeking, trying to understand the study material, and finding solutions to the

problems and they are working with others.

The students of Tagjaguimit National High School came from different backgrounds

and thus have different experiences and ways of engaging challenges. They are

exposed to various ways of numeracy understanding problem-solving and reasoning,

that each has some individual unique ways of tackling numeracy problems. Their

numeracy achievements also vary in others areas of development such as

resilience, perseverance and other relevant values.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to know the different coping mechanisms to challenges and

difficulties experienced by the students of Tagjaguimit National High School and how

they manage their problems with numeracy.

This study explores the various ways the students of Tagjaguimit National High

School cope up with the pressure of disinclination to mathematics.

This study also aims to review known effective ways and explore new and unique

ways of addressing challenges in numeracy of the National High School students of

Tagjaguimit. Learning numeracy is crucial in the overall academic competency of

students because it can influence the foundation of their future. Further, knowing

some coping mechanisms can somehow augment the lack of cognitive abilities of

some of the students.

This study especially aims to answer the following question:

1. What mathematical activities the students have undergone to overcome numeracy

difficulties?

2. What particular numeracy difficulties the students encounter the most?

3. What solutions they come up to manage the numeracy difficulties?

4. To enumerate effective ways or effective coping mechanisms to improve

numeracy competency?

skills?

9. How do you manage your time to give emphasis on your numerical skill

improvement endeavor?

10. Should you include mathematics in

your outlook? Why?

SURVEY RESULTS

In the first question, fifteen (15) students said that they enjoy themselves by studying

to cope with the pressure of needing to learn mathematics, eight (8) students said

that they cope with the pressure of learning mathematics by being positive, and

seven (7) students said that they don’t experience with pressure in mathematics

because their teacher teaches them very well.

In the second question, seventeen (17) students said that the thing that they do to

improve their numeracy skills is advanced studying, eight (8) students said that the

thing they do is studying, watching videos on YouTube, or searching on Google

about numeracy, and five (5) students said that they listen carefully on what the

teacher teaches to them.

In the third question, thirteen (13) students said that the activities they engage in to

overcome the challenges post by the disinclination to mathematics are joining an

activity that involves mathematics, twelve (12) students said that being active in

class, and five (5) students said that they review.

In the fourth question, nineteen (19) students said that family support plays an

important part to improve their numeracy skills because if you have a family to

support you, you can motivate yourself more, then you can use them as inspiration ,

and eleven (11) students said that they agree because, with the support of the family,

you also have the desire to master the numeracy.

In the fifth question, fifteen (15) students said that the family support that they think

should be promoted to help lessen the burden of their numeracy skill difficulties is by

giving them strength, and advice, and fifteen (15) students said that by always

support and believe them.

In the sixth question, thirty (30) students said that they integrate mathematics in their

daily life to improve their numeracy skills by calculating the change when they buy,

and they apply mathematics to themselves.

In the seventh question, thirteen (13) students said that difficulties they experienced

in mathematics is when the number is too big for them and problem-solving, ten (10)

students says that the difficulties they experienced are not listening to their teacher

while discussing so that they struggle on solving the problem, and seven (7) students

said that they don’t have difficulties in mathematics because their teacher teaches

them well.

In the eighth question, eleven (11) students said that the habit they undergone to

address their shortcomings in numeracy skills is they don’t stop every lesson if they

don’t learn it, and by improving their skills they study at night or if they have free time

they review or advance study, eight (8) students said that the habits they listening to

their teacher when discussing and also familiarizing their discussion about

very important, useful, especially in our daily lives because math is a life that why we

need to apply this every single day.

DISCUSSION

The result of the survey on how coping mechanism improve the learning of the

students of Tagjaguimit National High School in dealing with numeracy skill, and the

importance of the information on how students interact with one another. The result

show that students tend to have a various coping mechanism to make their

numeracy skill improve. Based on our survey, it appears that coping mechanisms

can play our role in improving academic performance particularly in the area of

numeracy. However, more specific details are needed to determine what kinds of

coping mechanisms are most effective and how they can be implemented in

practice. The respondents of our research are those students who have grades

above average in their mathematics subject but in spite of that, they are still

struggling on some competencies. They also have habits to overcome their

numeracy difficulties. Students learn new mathematical concepts and procedures by

building on what they already know. In other words, learning with understanding can

be viewed as making connections or establish relationships and either within existing

knowledge or between existing knowledge and new information.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

In the process of coping mechanism there are different kinds of decision that we

undertake to improve academic performance and develop literacy and numeracy

skills. There are various kinds of coping mechanism in learning numeracy that can

be drawn from the available information is that numeracy skills, like other academic

skills, can be improve through targeted interventions and practice. This suggests that

students who struggle with numeracy may benefit from additional support and

resources, such as tutoring, specialize instruction, or educational technology,

conventional teaching method or the traditional method is what schools commonly

used, it made students improve their attitude towards learning on numeracy. It is also

important to note that individual factors, such as motivation, self-efficacy, and prior

knowledge, can play significant role in academic performance. Therefore,

interventions that address those factors, in addition to numeracy skills, may be more

effective in improving overall academic performance and reducing the need for

coping mechanism. As a result of this study it was a great challenge for the students

to come up with the coping mechanisms and make decisions in relation to factors

affecting mathematical skill. In the study of Chinaveh (2013) stated that learning are

people that knows how to solve real life problems that involves numeracy with ease.

In addition, coping mechanism can support students and experience the opportunity

to adoptive learning. It can create strong mindset of a student to cope up in solving

problems in numeracy. To solve the problem that they are facing now about their

skills on learning numeracy, students must work with the teacher to improve their

numeracy skill. The following are the coping mechanisms we gathered to help them

to understand, and help them to address their difficulties in numeracy. Taking down

notes, spending time for review, sitting near the front, listening attentively, watch

tutorial on YouTube, and advance study.
