INTRODUCTION

A. BACKGROUND

English is an International language. By mastering English well, we will be able to


communicate with other nations in this world. In addition, we will also be able to
increase our insight and knowledge for the progress of our nation and country,
because we will be able to read English literature, listen to foreign radio broadcasts,
and watch films, adding insight into other sciences. Thus, in the end we can master
knowledge in all fields. Tenses are important in English language education. And it is
also a rule in English. If a person wants to master English well, then he must be able
to master tenses well. Among other forms of tense, in this paper we describe simple
past tense.

In pesri, we as a student are really encouraged by our school to learn English


language, even practising it in our daily life. English itself are known as the most
common language that used in the world to communicate or in the easy way is
international language. Ladies and gentleman, do you know that English is a
chronological language. English speakers simply always need to know when some
action or event took place. Chronology, or events and dates set in order of their
happening, is expressed by English speakers through verb tenses. Each tense indicates
the connection between two or more time periods or the exact time an activity
occurred, which underlines the importance of English grammar tenses. They can be
used to create different meanings from the same verbs and help to anchor the listener
understand the meaning behind your story. Actually tenses are also being teached at
pesri, and today we will focused to one tenses that learned at the 8th grade which is
known as simple past tense.

DISCUSSION

1. What Is Past Tense?

Past tense is a sentence used to express past sentences or events that have occurred,
Examples of past tense sentences are 1 hour ago, yesterday, a week ago, and events that have
already happened. Simple Past Tense is a sentence used to talk about an event that happened
in the past and has ended in the past. Simple Past Tense uses Verb 2.

2. What Is The Formula For Simple Past Tense?


A. Verbal Simple Past

Subject + Verb 2 + Object


Example :
- She joined the English club class at school
yesterday.
Positive (+)
- Abdul went to Bali for holiday last
Sunday.
- My mother cooked grilled fish this
morning.

Subject + Did + not + Verb 1 + Object


Example :
- Arini did not attend my birthday party last
Negative (-) month.
- I did not sleep well last night.
- You did not pay the tax last year.

Did + Subject + Verb 1 + Object


Example :
Interrogative (?) - Did he clean your room yesterday?
- Did they swim in the river last weekend?
- Did you stay aunt’s house last Monday?
In the Simple Past Tense the second verb (Verb 2) is only used in positive sentences.
If the form of the sentence is negative and it is a question then return to the first basic verb
(Verb 1) by adding did before the verb.

B. Nominal Past Tense

Subject + to be (was/were) + Non Verb


Example :
Positive (+) - She was sick last week.
- They were home last night.
- We were so happy the other day.

Subject + to be (was/were) + Not + Non


Verb
Negative (-) Example :
- She wasn’t sick last week.
- They weren’t home last night.
- We weren’t so happy the other day.

To be (was/were) + Subject + Non Verb


Example :
- Was she sick last week?
Interrogative (?) - Were they home last night?
- Were we so happy the other day?

# Was used for subject I, She, He, It.

# Were used for subject You, They, We.

C. Regular Verb And Irregular Verb :-

I. Regular Verb is a regular form of the verb where the verb is always added to the suffix -
ed, -d, -ied from the base verb form.

II. Irregular Verb is an irregular verb form or a change from the basic verb form.

3. Adverb of Time in Simple Past Tense

The adverb of time used is the adverb of the last time.


Among others are :
- Last Sunday
- Yesterday
- This morning
- Last weekend
- Last month
- Last night
- Last year
- Last Monday
- The other day
- Two days ago
- An hour ago, etc.

4. Use of Simple Past Tense


A. Describe the events of the lamp age and were completed at that time.
Example : I went to the market yesterday.
B. Explaining past events in the same time certain.
Example : I ate oatmeal this morning.
C. Describe repeated events or habits in the past.
Example : I often brought my lunch to school, when I was in Junior High School.
D. Describe feelings or emotions that occurred in the past.
Example : We were so happy the other day.
E. Describe an event that became a habit in the past but is no longer done.
Example : He used to love me but not anymore

A. Conclusion

Simple Past Tense is a sentence that is usually used to express a situation that has
been done in the past and finished at that time. The adverbs of time used by the
Simple Past Tense are: yesterday, last night, last weekend, this morning, two days ago,
etc.

B. Suggestion
From the studies that have been carried out, it is hoped that we will understand
more about tenses in English in this case "Present Past Tense". because in English
there are rules in the learning process, especially pronunciation. Readers and writers
want to involve themselves in the application of English in everyday life because
English is an international language.
