LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 4

FIRST QUARTER

Content Standard: The learners demonstrate understanding of changes that materials undergo
when exposed to certain conditions.
Performance Standard: The learners should be able to evaluate whether changes in materials are
useful or harmful to one’s environment.
Learning Competency: The learners should be able to describe changes in solid materials when
they are bent, pressed, hammered, or cut.

I. Objective: At the end of a 60-minute lesson, 80% of the pupils will be able to:
Describe changes in solid materials when they are bent, pressed, hammered or cut. (S4MT-Ie-f-5)

II. Subject Matter

A. Changes in Solid Materials
B. Materials: hammer, scissors, pictures, bond paper, plastic cup, straw, plastic bottle, wire, metal spoon,
fastener, paper clip, glass, vase, stone, candle, bread, rubber band, foam and clay
C. Reference: K to 12-S4MT-Ie-f5
Teacher Guide p.45-48, Learner’s Material p.38-48
D. Processing Skills: Observing, Describing, Investigating, Explaining, Synthesizing ideas,
and Communicating
E. Values Integration: Be Cautious
F. Integration: Health: Nakapagbibigay ng mungkahi at paraan upang makaiwas sa
hindi mabuting dulot ng mga sakuna at kalamidad
Math: Add similar fractions
Science: Classify materials as biodegradable and non-biodegradable

Game: Gimme…Solid materials found at home,
in school and in the community.
Use a graphic organizer.

(The pupils will give materials found at home,

school and community.)

(Pupils classify materials as biodegradable and non-

biodegradable materials.)

The materials found at home, school and community may

either be biodegradable or non-biodegradable materials. BIODEGRADABLE NON-BIODEGRADABLE

D. Explain (15 minutes)

1. Analysis and Discussion Half or one-half
What happened to the solid materials when they were
bent, hammered, presses and cut?
One – fourth
Was there a new material formed when solid material
were bent, hammered, presses and cut?

When this paper is cut, (the teacher cut the paper into two)
what part of the paper is this? ¾

I will cut one –half into two? What do you call this part? 7/8

Grade 4, I am talking about fractions. Do you know how to 3/3 or 1

add similar fractions? Let us try.
4/5
1. ¼ + 2/4 =
4/6
2. 3/8 + 4/8 =

3. 2/3 + 1/3 =

4. 2/5 + 2/5 = Solid materials can be bent, hammered, pressed and

cut. These materials may change their size and
5. 3/6 + 1/6 = shape, but no new material is formed. Hence, only
the physical appearance of the materials is
changed when bent, hammered, pressed and cut.
E. Elaborate (10 minutes) No new material was formed.
1. Generalization
What happened to the solid materials when they were
bent, hammered, presses and cut?
Was there a new material formed?
She should wash the cut thoroughly with mild soap
and water.
Apply clean bandage that will not stick to the
wound.

2. Application Be cautious.
Mrs. Olinares is covering the notebooks of
her children. While cutting the plastic covers, she
accidentally cut her middle finger. What shall she
do?
1. Food
What character trait should you possess while 2. Water
handling materials for cutting? 3. Clothes
4. Medicine
Grade 4, in times of calamities and disasters, 5. Tools
we need to be prepared. 6. Flashlight and batteries
What should be the content of our emergency 7. Money and documents
bag/kit?

1. wire – bent, cut

2. hollow blocks – hammered, cut
3. cement – pressed
In a construction site, the workers are doing different 4. plane sheets – cut, pressed
activities which changes the solid materials of their project. 5. wood – cut, hammered

following materials:
