System Integrators and OEMs may be responsible for the performance of

the machine or process. In order to achieve performance goals, they may

need to adjust set-points or/and parameters.

In our survey, system integrators commented that they often work on large
distributed processes where there is little to physically see except for
SCADA screens, which can be seen remotely. Thus, there is little difference
between making changes remotely vs. making them while sitting in the
control room.

Key points to consider when deciding to allow remote support:

• Can I wait a couple of days for a technician to get on-site and is the
technician making the change fully knowledgeable about the overall
process; or
• Can the engineer who wrote the program originally — and thus
fully understands the process and its intricacies — make the change
immediately using remote connectivity.

When comparing the two options, at times we feel that it is safer to make
the changes remotely.
