Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them
to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an
active learner.
Pretest - This measures your prior knowledge about the lesson at hand.
Recap - This part of the module provides a review of concepts and skills that
you already know about a previous lesson.
Posttest - This measures how much you have learned from the entire
module.
EXPECTATION S
PRETEST
Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter on a separate
sheet of paper.
RECAP
Below are the characteristics of map and globe, identify each characteristic
whether for map or globe or both, write “M” if it’s for map, “G” for globe or “B” for
both, write your answer on the space provided.
COORDINATE SYSTEM
Where is the Philippines? Some of you may answer, its located on Earth or it
can be found in Asian continent but where exactly is the location of the Philippines
on Earth or in Asian continent? Tricky question, right? But this can be answer in
today’s module and the following modules, using the coordinate system or the
imaginary lines on the globe.
Imaginary lines on the globe are the following: latitude, longitude, equator,
and prime meridian.
NORTH
SOUTH
Figure 1. Latitude
Latitude
Figure 2. Longitude
Longitude
Longitudes are vertical lines; it gives the measurements east or west of the
Prime Meridian. Longitudes are imaginary lines running from the North Pole to the
South Pole. Lines of longitude are often referred to as meridians.
Meridians are important for setting time zones. Longitudes are measured in
equal degrees per line.
Figure 3. Equator
Equator
Equator is located at zero degree (0º). With the Equator as the reference
point, the North Pole lies at 90°N and the South Pole lies at 90°S.
Figure 4. Prime Meridian
Prime Meridian
An imaginary line dividing the earth’s surface into two hemispheres; Western
Hemisphere and Easter Hemisphere.
Prime meridian serves as a reference point for measuring the distance east
or west, located at zero degree (0º) at Greenwich, England. The farthest point
eastwards from the Prime Meridian is expressed as 180°E and the farthest point
westward is expressed as 180°W.

Guide Question:
What are the different imaginary lines on the globe?
Activity 3: Home Map Procedure:
Imaginary lines are useful in locating places.
Modified True or False. Write true if the sentence is correct. If it is false, change
the underlined word/words with one that will make the sentence correct. Write
your answers on the space provided.
___________1. Coordinate system is consisting of latitude, longitude, equator,
and prime meridian.
___________2. Latitudes are imaginary lines running from west to east on the
Earth’s surface.
___________3. Prime meridian serves as a reference point for measuring the
distance east or west.
___________4. Equator is located at ninety degrees (90º).
___________5. Lines of longitude are often referred to as parallels.
VALUING
Have you tried to visit a place for the first time? For instance, you are going
to Pasig Mega Market, if you are unfamiliar with the location, what is the best way
to find specific stall or food section in the wet market?
Why it is important to use directory map?
POSTTEST
Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter on a separate
sheet of paper.
1. Equator divides the Earth’s surface into two hemispheres, which two
hemispheres are being determined?
A. Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere
B. Western Hemisphere and Eastern Hemisphere
C. North Pole and South Pole
D. None of the above
2. Why prime meridian serves as the reference point for measuring west or east
distance?
A. It is located at zero degree (0º)
