Hatching and Boundaries
Hatch

Fills an enclosed area or selected objects with a hatch pattern, solid fill, or
gradient fill.

An AutoCAD hatch is a separate object that fills a space; has an appearance dictated by
the hatch pattern assigned to it; and by default, is associated with the objects that bound
the space, such as lines, polylines, or arcs. If you move or stretch the boundaries,
AutoCAD normally updates the hatching to fill the resized area.

Examples of Hatch

Boundary (Hatch)

You can also select an area to be hatched by picking specific objects to

define the boundary, but you must select enough objects to define a fully
enclosed region.

No matter which selection method you choose, the boundary must be

airtight. Boundary objects can overlap, but there can’t be any leaks, not
even microscopic ones.

There are two ways to select the hatch boundary:

1. Select an area enclosed by wireframe:

Click in free space within an area enclosed by wireframe objects.
Clicking as shown below hatches region A

2. Use wireframe to define the boundary:

• Click a wireframe object as the start object of the hatch boundary.

• When an object is selected, the Create Hatch toolbar is displayed and a boundary is
selected.

• When you have decided where you want the hatch boundary to lie, select an object
near to an intersection such that you want the boundary to turn left at that intersection.
For example, to hatch region A, click the objects as shown below:

External Reference Files

Attaches, overlays, lists, binds, detaches, reloads, unloads, renames, and

modifies paths to external references (xrefs) in the current (or host) drawing.

1. Choose Insert,ExternalReference...
or
2. Click the Xref Iconfrom the Reference Toolbar.
or
3. Type XREF at the command Prompt. Command: XREF

The following are Xref characteristics:

-An external reference file is known as an “Xref”.

-Current drawing contains only a “pointer”, the path and filename, to the Xref.
-The current drawing does not increase much in size when it contains an Xref.
-The Xref is reloaded each time the current drawing is loaded, thus always
showing the latest revision of the Xref.
-Xrefs import their linetypes, layers, text styles, dimstyles, views, ucs’s,
vports, and blocks into their currentdrawing.

-Each Xref named object is prefixed with the xref drawing name and a pipe “|”
symbol.
(i.e. HOUSE|A-WALL for drawing house.dwg and layer a-wall)
- Xdep stands for external reference dependent objects.
- Xref’s layers can be turned on/off in the current drawing.
- Layer zero(0) resides on layer zero(0) of the current drawing.
- Xrefs can be bound to the current drawing, in which case they become blocks.

17 | Page

-Xref layers cannot be made current the the drawing they are xreferenced into.
- Xrefs can be snappedto.
-Xref entities cannot be individually modified in the current drawing.
-Xrefs can be plotted.
-Xrefs can be detatched from the current drawing and will disappear.
-The current drawing pointer, file and pathname can be changed.
-Xrefs can be re-loaded during the current drawing session.
-Xrefs can be nested.
-Xrefs can be clipped to show parts of the reference files.

becomes HOUSE$0$A-WALL). Binding looses the connection to the
referenced file. Xrefs can also be inserted like Wblocks.

To Bind an Xref:
1. Choose Insert,Xref Manager
2. Choose an xref name.

3. Choose the Bindoption.

4. Choose Bind or Insert.

Overlay an Xref

Overlays are typically used when you need to view another drawing’s geometry
temporarily, but don’t plan to plot using that data. In the following illustration,
several people are working on drawings referenced by master.dwg. The
person working on a.dwg needs to see the work being completed by the
person working on b.dwg, but does not want to xref b.dwg because it would
then appear twice in master.dwg. Instead, the person overlays b.dwg, which
is not included when a.dwg is referenced by master.dwg.

1. Choose the Attachoption from the Xref Dialog.

or
2. Click the Xref Attach Iconfrom the Reference Toolbar.
3. Choose a drawing name to attach.
4. Choose Overlayin the AttachXrefdialog box under Reference
Type.

What is the SolidWorks Software?

SOLIDWORKS mechanical design automation software is a feature-
based, parametric solid modeling design tool which takes advantage of
the easy to learn windows graphical user interface. You can create fully
associative 3D solid models with or without constraints while utilizing
automatic or user defined relations to capture design intent.

SolidWorks User Interface

The SOLIDWORKS user interface is a native windows interface and as
such behaves in the same manner as other windows applications.

Introduction to Sketching
• The sketch is the basis for most 3D models.

• Creating a model usually begins with a sketch. From the sketch,

you can create features. You can combine one or more features to
make a part. Then, you can combine and mate the appropriate
parts to create an assembly. From the parts or assemblies, you can
then create drawings.

• A sketch is a 2D profile or cross section. To create a 2D sketch, you

use a plane or a planar face. In addition to 2D sketches, you can
also create 3D sketches that include a Z axis, as well as the X and
Y axes.

Extrudes
The Extrude Property Manager defines the characteristics of
extruded features. You can create these types of extruded features:

Revolves
Revolves add or remove material by revolving one or more profiles
around a centerline. You can create revolved boss/bases, revolved cuts,
or revolved surfaces. The revolve feature can be a solid, a thin feature,
or a surface.

Creating Revolve Features

Lofts
• Loft creates a feature by making transitions between profiles. A
loft can be a base, boss, cut, or surface.
• You create a loft using two or more profiles. Only the first, last, or
first and last profiles can be points. All sketch entities, including
guide curves and profiles, can be contained in a single 3D sketch

Sweeps
• Sweep creates a base, boss, cut, or surface by moving a profile
(section) along a path. A sweep can be simple or complex.
• To generate the sweep geometry, the software creates a series
of intermediate sections made by replicating a profile at various
positions along the path. The intermediate sections are then
blended together. Additional parameters can be included in the
sweep feature such as guide curves, profile orientation options,
and twist to create a wide variety of shapes.
Sweeps can:

Boundary
Boundary tools produces very high quality, accurate features useful
for creating complex shapes for markets focused on consumer
product design, medical, aerospace, and molds.

Creating Boundaries

Fillet Overview
Fillet/Round creates a rounded internal or external face on the part.
You can fillet all edges of a face, selected sets of faces, selected
edges, or edge loops.

Chamfers
The chamfer tool creates a beveled feature on selected edges,
faces, or a vertex.

Ribs
Rib is a special type of extruded feature created from open or closed
sketched contours. It adds material of a specified thickness in a
specified direction between the contour and an existing part. You can
create a rib using single or multiple sketches. You can also create rib
features with draft or select a reference contour to draft.

Scales
• You can scale a part or surface
model about its centroid, the
model origin, or a coordinate
system.
• The Scale feature scales only
the geometry of the model, for
use in data export, cavities,
and so on. It does not scale
dimensions, sketches, or
reference geometry. With
multibody parts, you can scale
one or more bodies.
• A Scale feature is like any
other feature in the Feature
Manager design tree: it
manipulates the geometry, but
it does not change the
definitions of features created
before it was added. To
temporarily restore the model
to its unscaled size, you can
roll back or suppress
the Scale feature.

Scaling a Part
You can scale a part or surface model about its centroid, the model
origin, or a coordinate system.

Shells
• The shell tool hollows out a part, leaves open the faces you select,
and creates thin-walled features on the remaining faces.
• If you do not select any face on the model, you can shell a solid
part, creating a closed, hollow model. You can also shell a model
using multiple thicknesses.

Drafts
• Draft tapers faces using a specified angle to selected faces in the
model.
• One application is to make a molded part easier to remove from
the mold. You can insert a draft in an existing part or draft while
extruding a feature. You can apply draft to solid or surface models.
• You can also apply a draft angle as a part of an extruded base,
boss, or cut.

Intersecting Bodies to Modify Part Geometry

You can intersect and merge surfaces, planes, or solid bodies in a
part with the Intersect tool. For example, you can add details to a body
by merging it with a coincident open surface. You can also split a body
by intersecting it with a plane.

Creating a Joined Part

In an assembly, you can join two or more parts to create a new part.
The join operation removes surfaces that intrude into each other's
space and merges the part bodies into a single solid volume.

Combine Bodies
• In a multibody part, you can combine multiple solid bodies to
create a single-bodied part or another multibody part.
• You can add or subtract bodies or keep material that is common
to the selected bodies.
• You can only combine bodies contained within one multibody
part file. You cannot combine two separate parts. However, you
can create a multibody part by using Insert Part to place one
part into the other part file. Then you can use Combine on the
multibody part.
• It is strongly recommended that you do not use
the Combine feature to combine weldment bodies. It is not
always possible to calculate the cut list properties accurately for
a body created using the combine feature.
