TASK SHEET

Title:
Testing the GFCI with a Multimeter Tester

Performance Objective:

Test the GFCI following the specifications given below and in compliance with the PEC
standards.

Supplies/Materials:

● Installed GFCI

Equipment:

● Multimeter tester
Steps/Procedure:
1. Set the multimeter tester to the AC Voltage setting, and to the highest voltage
range.
2. Connect the probes to the proper inputs on the tester: COM for the black lead and
Volts for the red lead.
3. Connect the red probe lead into the right slot of the outlet.
4. Connect the black probe lead into the left slot of the outlet.
5. Examine the result displayed on the meter. there should be a reading of 220 Volts.
If the multimeter reads 0.0, it can mean a bad lead connection. Try to move it
around for better contact. If the result still does not change to a value, there is a
chance of an electrical problem with the outlet.
6. Remove the black probe lead from the slot and put it inside the oval slot of the
outlet, which is the ground. A voltage reading should be displayed on the
multimeter. If no reading is displayed, then the GFCI must be defective.
