According to the reading passage, the author believes that a several solutions are

available to use to problem with the emerald ash borer. However, in the lecture, the professor

brings three compelling reasons to support the idea that none of the solutions are viable.

First of all, the lecturer claims that removing the affected trees is not effective way.

This is because the trees need at least one to two years to show infection symptom,

meanwhile the borer would already be spread to another tress. Moreover, it is only useful in

urban area, in the other word, removing method cannot use in somewhere there are a lot of

trees, such as forest. This cast doubt on the reading passage’s thought that eliminating the

infected trees is a solution.

Second, the speaker points out that chemical treatment is problematic. The reason is

that chemical substances are going to cause ground water contamination. Additionally, It does

not work if a large number of larvae is already spread because it disturb the tree’s circulation

system then block the insecticides to flow up to the tree. This goes against the writer’s idea

that insecticide can deal with the emerald ash borers.

Finally, the speaker asserts that biological pest control includes a several issues. This

is supported by the fact that the survive rate of the wasps depends on region, which means

they cannot endure cold weather. Furthermore, the wasps could also bring unintended

consequences, such as kill the other insects. This counter the author’s assertion that control

the biological pest can reduce the number of borers.
