VI. Concept Notes

Changes in matter bring about changes in the environment. Unfavorable

changes in the condition of the environment due to chemical change may result in land,
water and air pollution that will affect human and other living things. There are several
changes that can be made to minimize wastes. People can apply the 5R’s (reuse,
recycle, repair, rot and reduce) for responsible waste management.

Examples:

1. Burning of tires. It releases smoke

and toxins that enter the air. It pollutes
the air because of its ashes and smoke.
The smoke and toxins that enter the air
also contribute to the greenhouse effect
and global warming (abnormal rise of
the earth’s temperature). Old tires can
be made into pots of plants.

2. Cutting down trees. It affects the

quality of air we breathe. It causes a
rapid change in temperature. Rain levels
are affected since moisture in the air
could not be retained by trees. It causes
soil erosion and flood. Also, many
animals lose their habitats. One should
plant trees for clean air.

3. Burning of plastics. It releases

chemical like chlorofluorocarbons
(CFCs) which destroy the ozone layer
(layer of the earth’s atmosphere where
most ultraviolet radiation from the sun is
absorbed). Burning of garbage is
already prohibited because it pollutes
the air. Spray nets and insecticides are
made of CFC’s. Polluted air causes
lung cancer and other respiratory
diseases like asthma and bronchitis.
Waste materials like plastic, can and
papers should be recycled and reused.

Page 2
4. Landfill. Serves as breeding places of
flies and other pests that carry bacteria
and viruses which causes diseases such
as cholera and leptospirosis. Wastes
should be segregated. Methane gas is
usually emitted by decaying materials.

5. Using detergents in washing clothes

in the river. It kills fish and other living
organisms in the river due to toxic
substance in detergents. Avoid washing
clothes in the river.

6. Burning of fuel. Carbon monoxide

(CO) is a colorless and poisonous gas, it
is a by-product of burning fuel that
causes drowsiness and headache. Lead
(Pb) is also released from the exhaust of
vehicles that used leaded gasoline and it
can cause brain damage.

7. Oil Spill. Oil does not dissolve in

water. This prevents oxygen (O) in the
air from mixing with water. The living
things in water get less oxygen and so
may die.

Task 1. Yes or No. Read the statements below. Write Yes if the practice is good or No
if it is not.

__________1. Burn garbage to save time and effort.

__________2. Plant trees and ornamental plants.
__________3. Segregate waste materials into biodegradable, non-biodegradable and
hazardous.
__________4. Smoking cigarette to release stress.
__________5. Using unleaded gasoline.

Task 2. Classify Me. Below are changes in materials, categorize each whether they are
useful or harmful to the environment.

__________1. Burning fuel.

__________2. Landfill
__________3. Freezing
__________4. Rotting of fruits
__________5. Oil spills

Task 3. True or False. Read and statements carefully. Write True if the statement is
correct or False if it is wrong.

_________1. Soapy water and oil thrown in the river can kill aquatic plants and animals.
_________2. CFC’s are chemicals that help form the ozone layer.
_________3. Ashes and smoke can cause skin allergy.
_________4. Use gel and hair polish instead of spray net because it contains aerosols
made of CFC’s.
_________5. Dust particles and soot are examples of air pollutants.

Task 4. Word Search. Below are the changes in materials, arrange the jumbled letters
to reveal the word.

1. The process of decaying. _________
